TODAY'S NEWS FROM BRITISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

BRITISH SEMI-FINALS WILL BE

CONTESTED BY FOUR CONTINENTALS

Saturday morning's semi-finals of the British women's amateur championship at Royal St George's GC, Sandwich in Kent will be contested by four players from the Continent.

And so the sequence of four successive title wins by British players - Kelly Tidy (2010), Stephanie Meadow (2011), Lauren Taylor (2012) and Georgia Hall (2013) - is broken.

Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted),  the only British player in the quarter-finals, lost by 4 and 3 to Copenhagen's Emily Pedersen, pictured right, winner of the European women's amateur title last year and ranked No 26 in the world to Alice's No 484.
The teenage GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy player twice led in the early stages but the writing was on the wall for her when Pedersen won the eighth, ninth, 10th and 12th to surge into a four-hole lead.
Halves at the 13th, 14th and 15th, clinched the Danish player's place in the last four.
Curtis Cup player Gemma Dryburgh (Beaconsfield), the only Scot to reach the last 16 lost by two holes to Pedersen in the morning's third round.

In the semi-finals, Pedersen will play Jenny Haglund (tee-off 8.30am), pictured left, from Karlstad, Sweden and a student at Southern Methodist University, Dallas in Texas.
Jenny, who won the American Athletic Conference title on the US women's college circuit earlier this year,  scored a surprise afternoon win by 3 and 2 over Spain's Noemi Jimenez, world-ranked No 10 in comparison to Haglund's No 146 rating.
In the second semi-final, which will tee off about 8.40am, it will be Marion Veyssere from France against Leslie Cloots, pictured below, from Antwerp, Belgium and a student at North Carolina University.

Cloots, the No 2 qualifier for the match-play stages, was four up with six to play against Germany's Junior Solheim Cup player Antonia Scherer but lost the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18.
Cloots, ranked No 448 in the world, recovered her poise and nerve in time to win at the 19th.
Her semi-final opponent, Veysseyre, is ranked No 225 in the world.
The French girl, pictured left, had an excellent 2 and 1 win in the quarter-finals against Anne Van Dam (Netherlands) who has a world ranking of No 110.
The Dutch girl was one up at the turn but by the 16th Veysseyre had reversed her position so that she was one up and she clinched victory by taking the 17th.
The 18-hole final will tee off at 1pm on Saturday.
There is no admission charge and no car parking fee, so the Ladies Golf Union are hoping that the last-day matches will attract good-sized galleries.
Not too far from France for Marion Veysseyre's supporters to make the trip over by ferry to Kent.
+So how did the qualifying positions work out in the match-play? Not too well.
Emily Pedersen, No 17 qualifier, plays Jenny Haglund, No 45 qualifier.
Marion Veysseyre, No 43 qualifier, plays Leslie Cloots, the No 2 seed.
All of which goes to prove that stroke-play and match-play are two entirely different forms of golf!

EARLIER REPORT
ALICE HEWSON ONLY BRIT LEFT

IN QUARTER-FINALS OF "BRITISH "

Junior Vagliano Trophy player Alice Hewson, pictured, is the only British player in the quarter-finals of the British women's open amateur championship at Royal St George's Golf Club, Sandwich in Kent.
The teenage Berkhamsted player scored a notable third round win over the highest World Ranked player in the field - Su-Hyun Oh from Australia, who is No 5 in the WAGR this week (Alice is No 484).
Alice won at the 19th after being one up through six holes.
It is the second year in a row that Oh, who was leading qualifier at Machynys 12 months ago, has made her exit before the quarter-finals. Perhaps she is a better stroke than match-player!
Alice now plays the European champion from last year, Copenhagen's Emily Pedersen, who beat the last surviving Scot, Curtis Cup player Gemma Dryburgh (Beaconsfield), by two holes. Pedersen is ranked No 26 in the WAGR.

Gemma's dad John told Kirkwoodgolf:
"Gemma lost on the last. Very proud of her. The match turned on the 15th and 18th. Gemma rolled into the bunker on the last roll of the ball on the 15th and could only make a par 5.

"Emily hooked her approach shot and was heading into the trouble left but caught the bank, kicked left to 10 feet and made the putt.
"On the 18th Emily's second shot ended up in the bunker 40 feet short. She hit her recovery into the face of the bunker and miraculously the ball ran up the face and out. She was able to close the match out from there.
"That's the breaks in golf but it would be nice if they were more even!
"Emily is a very good player but she might find it hard if she goes behind in her next match as she has a temper which reminds me of Suzanne Pettersen.
"Great fun and nice to play in good weather this week."

Gemma's Curtis Cup team-mate Gabrielle Cowley (Hanbury Manor) lost by 3 and 2 to Anne Van Dam from the Netherlands. The Dutch player is No 110 in the WAGR
Londoner Rosie Davies, entered from Indiana University, lost by 5 and 4 to Spain's Noemi Jimenez who, at No 10, is the highest world ranked player left in the championship.
Belgium's Leslie Cloots, the No 2 qualifier for the match-play stages, is still there. She is ranked No 448 in the world but obviously playing a whole lot better than this week.
