NORTH-EAST PAIR HELP SCOTS
 CLEAR FIRST SWEDISH HURDLE

Scotland cleared their first match-play hurdle in the European boys’ team golf championship at Bokskogens Golf Club, Malmo in Sweden today.
They beat Belgium 3-4 in one of the four championship flight ties and now play Sweden for a place in the final.
In the top half of the draw, Norway beat France 5½-1½ and Sweden overpowered Netherlands 5½-1½.
United States-bound Lewis Kirton (Newmachar) and Banchory’s James Byrne were the Scotland heroes with two wins out of two.
They combined in the morning foursomes to win by 5 and 4 but Ross Kellett (Colville Park) and James White (Lundin) lost the other tie. That meant it was all to play for in the three singles.
Scotland clinched their place in the last four when Kirton and Byrne won the first two singles. Lewis finished one up while Byrne was a 3 and 2 winner.
Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) lost his singles tie by 3 and 1.
