LUCK OF THE IRISH! NIALL WINS
BOYD QUAICH ON LAST ROUND
Irishman Niall O’Connor won the Boyd Quaich international students’ golf championship at St Andrews today in the tightest of finishes.
O’Connor and Canadian Justin Fluit from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada both totalled one-over-par 289 from two rounds over the Old Course and two rounds over the New.
The rules of the Boyd Quaich, which is a memorial to St Andrews student brothers Quentin and Anthony Boyd, both killed in the summer of 1944, do not cater for a play-off in these situations.
Instead a comparison of the final rounds was the tie-breaker. Niall had a 71 over the Old Course to Justin’s 72.
It had been a nip-and-tuck contest dominated by O’Connr, from the University of Dublin, and Fluit. The Canadian was the halfway leader on 144, a shot ahead of Fluit. Both shot 73 over the New Course in the third round to leave it all hanging on the final round over the Old.
Gordon Yates (Stirling University) was third on 293.
