Olivia Mehaffey surges five clear in Welsh stroke-play

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Olivia Mehaffey is well on her way to retaining the Welsh women's open amateur stroke play championship at Conwy Golf Club, North Wales.
The 18-year-old Royal County Down Ladies star, selected for the Curtis Cup match at Dun Laoghaire GC, Ireland in June, slashed 11 shots off her opening round of 79 to post a 68 for a 36-hole tally of 147 and a five shot lead over Lianna Bailey (Kirby Muxloe) who has had scores of 78 and 74 for 152.
Lianna narrowly missed out on automatic Curtis Cup team selection through the LGU Order of Merit table
Lying third on 153 is Fiona Liddle with scores of 81 and 72 for 153.
Fiona is a former Scottish U18 champion who lives in Germany where her father is a club professional. Fiona's mother is German and Fiona has elected to play out of Germany, where she was born, rather than Scotland, her dad's home land.
Former Scottish amateur champion Gabrielle Macdonald is tied eighth on 157 with rounds of 80 and 77.
The only other Scot in the field, Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) made the cut with one shot to spare. She had scores of 84 and 79 for 163 and a tied 34th position.
The cut to the leading 45 and ties for Sunday play was 164 or better.
