Gabrielle Macdonald in top 10 at end of

Welsh stroke-play Day 1

 By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Former Scottish champion Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw), pictured below, had a seven-over-par 80 which, in very testing conditions, was good enough to earn her a tied ninth position in a field of 84 players at the end of the opening day of the Welsh women's open amateur championship at Conwy Golf Club.

The weather was so bad that the CSS was 80 (reduction only) and a pair of 77s, from Ireland's Sinead Sextion and England's Gemma  Clews shared the lead in this 72-hole stroke-play tournament.
Defending champion and Curtis Cup selection Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies) had a 79 for a share of fifth place.
"Helen Holm" winner last weekend, Olivia Winning (Rotherham) is alongside Macdonald on the 80 mark.
Former Scottish U18 girls champion and professional's daughter Fiona Liddell, who plays out of Germany because she lives there and her mother is German, had an 81 to be T19 and Hanunah McCook (Grantown on Spey) shot an 84 for a T44 position going into Saturday's second round at the end of which there will be a cut for Sunday's final two rounds.
