CANADIAN HENDERSON LEADS BY THREE AFTER FIRST ROUND OF "THE SALLY"

Canadian ladies amateur champion Brooke Mackenzie Henderson (pictured) won the girls' Junior Orange Bowl at Coral Gables, Florida over the festive period and she has carried over her good form to lead by three strokes at the end of the first round of "The Sally" - the South Atlantic Ladies Amateur championship - at Oceanside Country Club, Ormond Beach, also in Florida.
Henderson, No. 6 in the Women's World Amateur Rankings, had a cluster of seven birdies between the sixth and 15th for a five-under-par 67 (35-32).
A bogey at the 18th prevented her from finishing the opening day even farther ahead.
Still only 16 years old, Brooke, proud of her Scottish heritage that she uses her middle name "Mackenzie," won five leading titles in 2013, capped off by a five-stroke victory in the Junior Orange Bowl. She also won the Canadian women's and South American women's amateur championships, the CN Future Links Pacific championship and the girls' individual title at The Spirit International tournament in Texas.
England youngster Annabel Dimmock (Wentworth) and Spain's Harin Lee will start the second round of "The Sally" in joint second place after matching 70s. Annabel had six birdies in havles of 36-34 but had bogeys at the second, third, fifth and 17th.
Annabel is 377th in the WAGR; Harin 504th.
Stirling physical education student Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), ranked 117th in the WAGR, is in fourth place on her own with a 73 which included a triple bogey 7 at the 15th.
She also bogeyed the first but, on the credit side, the former Scottish girls champion had birdies at the fifth, long 12th and long 17th.
Aberdeen's Rachel Polson, a student in Florida, is in joint ninth place alongside Wales' Chloe Williams. They both shot 75. Rachel was heading for a low-70s score after birdies at the first and 15th but she had a disappointing finish with a bogey at the long 17th and a double bogey 6 at the 18th.
St Andrews' Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), like Briggs a past Scottish U18 girls match-play champion, just made the top 20 with a 77 for a share of 20th place.
Stirling student Hannah McCook from Nethy Bridge and Ranfurly Castle's Iona Stephen are T34 on 80, a shot ahead of another Stirling student, Tara Mactaggart from Minto.
Yet another Stirling student, Jordana Graham from Southerness, had four double bogeys in an 85 for a share of 53rd place.
One of the surprisingly high scores of the first day was an 86 from GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy team player Sammy Fuller. She had only five pars in halves of 42-44. She had two 7s and a 6 but did birdie the seventh and 13th beefore finishing with four successive bogeys.
Sammy is T57 in a strong field of 73 players.
The tournament is over 72 holes of stroke play.
