UNIVERSITY OF HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS MAN APPOINTED TO EUROPEAN POST

Media Release

A UHI academic has been appointed to a top golf job in the university sector.
Dr Rob Macpherson, 41, Subject Leader for Business and Leisure at the University of the Highlands and Islands, has been chosen to be the Technical Commissioner for Golf by the European University Sports Association for 2012-2016.
The role, which co-ordinates annual golf championships and events across the continent, is one of 19 technical commissioners for sports within the association.
Dr Macpherson, who also is Chair of Golf for British Universities and Colleges Sport and Manager of Golf for Scottish Student Sport, has been involved with volunteer amateur golf administration and competition for 25 years.
A resident of Dornoch, but originally from Nairn, Dr Macpherson has also held positions as Director of Golf Studies at North Highland College UHI’s campus in Dornoch and programme leader for the university’s successful BA (Hons) golf management degree.
Speaking about his new role, Dr Macpherson said: “To have the responsibility for shaping, organising, managing and promoting European University Golf in the wake of the recent Ryder Cup is a tremendous honour and privilege.
"To take on this role – and to be the only Sports Technical Commissioner from Great Britain – will be both challenging and fulfilling.”
Andrej Pisl, EUSA Communications Manager added: “The success of EUSA sports events relies on a good team of sport specialists. We congratulate Rob on his appointment and are really happy to have the opportunity to work with him over the next four years.”
Dr Macpherson was nominated for the post by the Scottish, English and Welsh Golf Unions. He successfully managed the British University golf team to individual and team silver at this year’s World University Golf Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic.
One of his first duties will be to attend this year’s EUSA Convention, which will take place in Portoroz, Slovenia, from November 15 to 18.
