GABRIELLA COWLEY WINS SCOTS Under 16S TITLE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLAND GOLF
Gabriella Cowley made it three in a row for England when she won the Scottish Under-16 girls' open stroke play championship by a stroke at Strathmore.
The West Essex player, pictured with the trophy, by courtesy of Dawn Butchart, who is also the English U15 girls’ champion, returned a pair of 73s for a two-over par total of 146.
Her victory kept the trophy safely in English hands, following the successes of Cheshire’s Bronte Law last year and Lancashire’s Emily Taylor in 2010.
Cowley finished one stroke clear of Italy’s Ludovica Farina and a further shot ahead of Hertfordshire’s Nicola Callander, who had a storming 68. It was the low round of the championship and she was five-under for the back nine. Another English girl, Lianna Bailey (Notts Ladies’) took fourth place.
Gabriella, 16, was part of a six-strong England Golf squad at the championship and she won the praise of coach Scott Godfrey.
“Gabriella is a class act,” said Scott. “She’s very calm and collected on the golf course and that shone through. She remained patient and stuck to what she had to do.
“It wasn’t easy today, it was freezing cold and very windy and she handled it really well. She played very consistently over the two days and I think she deserved to win.”
Gabriella played the front nine in two-over par and came home in one-under, before settling in for a nervy wait as Farina completed her round. A play-off looked on the cards until the Italian bogeyed the last to drop one behind.
“We were all behind the green watching and it was a bit tense!” said Scott. “But now Gabriella is over the moon.”
Fellow England squad player Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) was also in contention for the title, until a four-putt nightmare on the short 13th cost her a 6. However she regrouped admirably and played the remaining five holes in level par to tie for fifth place.
“She played very nicely both days from tee to green but just lost a few shots around the green,” said Scott. The squad was completed by Annabel Dimmock (Wentworth), Emma Harris (Peel Ladies), Sophie Keech (Lyme Regis) and Sophie Madden (West Essex).
“The course was well set up and all the girls will have learned something about the aspects of their game that they need to work on,” said Scott. England 1, represented by Gabriella Cowley, Sophie Keech and Annabel Dimmock, were third in the international team event.

BRILLIANT LAST ROUND OF 68 BY NICOLA CALLANDER - AND SHE'S A SCOT!

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
England's Under-15 champion Gabriella Cowley from West Essex won the Scottish Under-16 girls' open amateur stroke-play golf championship in an exciting finish at Strathmore Golf Centre, Alyth.
With overnight leader Camilla Mortiglieno (Italy) slumping from a par 72 to a 79 for 151, the title was up for grabs.
Cowley, a playing partner of Camilla, got two birdies at par-5 holes on the inward half, the 12th and 14th, and could afford to bogey the short 17th and still post a repeat 73 for a two-over-par aggregate of 146.
Another Italian, Ludovica Farina, birdied the third, sixth, 13th and 14th and was level with Cowley with three holes to play. But she bogeyed the 18th for a 73 and a total of 147, one shot away from forcing a play-off.
The round of the day - and the tournament - came from the leading Anglo-Scot, Nicola Callander (Mill Green GC, Hertfordshire), pictured above.
Making a 12-shot improvement on her first round, Nicola shot a brilliant four-under-par 68, thanks to a terrific inward half of five-under 32.
She birdied the 10th, 11th, long 12th, long 14th and long 18th for an aggregate of 148 to surge up through the field into third place, only two shots behind the winner.
Nicola's father is Scots-born Colin Callander, former editor of the Golf Monthly magazine and now a freelance golf writer as well as being Press Officer at the Ricoh Women's British Open and the forthcoming Curtis Cup match (June 8-10) at The Nairn GC.
Nicola was born in England but both her parents are Scottish which qualifies her to play for Scotland at whatever level. Selectors please note!
Two more Scots figured in a tie with England's Alice Hewson for fifth place on 150 - Germany-based Fiona Liddell (73-77) and St Andrews' Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) (76-74).
England scooped the individual and the team awards 12 months ago at this popular event but this year they had to settle for one out of two, Gabriella Cowley following in the footsteps of Bronte Law who has gone on to be named in the GB and I Curtis Cup team this year.
Italy won the team title with a total of 294 with Scotland 1 in second place on 298 and England 1 third on 300.
The Scots who were runners-up were Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), Clara Young (North Berwick) and Lauren Whyte.

Play did not start until 9.30am following an overnight thunder and lightning storm following by hailstones. Excess water had to be cleared off the course before play could start for the day.
