CAMILLA FROM SAN REMO LEADS SCOTTISH U16 GIRLS OPEN CHSHP

Italy's Camilla Mortigliengo has a one-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the Scottish Under-16 girls' open stroke-play golf championship at the Strathmore Golf Centre, Alyth.
Starting at the 10th, the San Remo player birdied the 11th, short 13th and short 17th to be three-under-par but, like most of the big field, she found holes one to nine a good deal more difficult than the others.
The weather had something to do with it - sometimes bright, sometimes wet but never remotely warm.
Camilla, bidding to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Laura Sedda, who won this title in 2008, bogeyed the first, seventh and ninth for 38 home and a creditable par-matching 72.
Among the pack on her tail on the 73 mark is Clara Young (North Berwick), the youngest ever East Lothian women's county champion who played for GB and I in the inaugural Under-16s Junior Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Royal Porthcawl last June.
Clara's round was almost a duplicate of the leaders - good figures when playing holes 10 to 18 first but then finding trouble on what is normally the outward half.
Clara birdied the 11th, 15th, short 17th and long 18th to cover her first nine in four-under-par 33. Then it got difficult. Young bogeyed the second and short fourth before running up a double bogey 6 at the seventh and dropping another shot at the ninth to take 40 for her second half and a round of 73.
There are actually TWO Scots sharing second place - the other being Fiona Liddell who is entered from Germany where her dad works.
Gabriella Cowley from West Essex, one of the pre-tournament favourites, is also on 73. She had birdies at the long 12th and long 14th in her outward half. And, unlike most of her rivals, she was able to par her last eight holes (second to ninth).
Another English challenger, Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) is on the one-over-par mark. Starting at the 10th, she birdied the 10th and long 14th to be two-under 35 at her turn. Then she dropped shots at the second, short fourth and seventh.
