ELIZABETH MALLETT WINS WHITTINGTON TROPHY BY SIX STROKES

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLAND GOLF
England girl international Elizabeth Mallett took a break from her A level studies to shoot a course record and score a six-shot winning margin in the ladies’ Whittington Trophy at Whittington Heath, Staffordshire.
The 17-year-old former British girls open championship finalist, pictured right, posted a first round score of two-under 70 before adding a five-under par 67, which clipped a shot off the previous standard set by Somerset’s Hannah Grant.
She finished six shots ahead of former Curtis Cup player Hannah Barwood and 2011 winner, Alex Peters, and claimed the trophy for the first time, having lost out last year in a three-way play-off.
Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies’) had 14 birdies during the course of the day, with seven in each round. Her afternoon birdies all came in her last 10 holes.
“I’m extremely pleased,” said Elizabeth, who trains with England Golf’s Performance Squad. It was the latest in a run of classy scores over the last couple of weeks: 67 in The Leveret at Formby Ladies, followed by 66 in the French Lady Junior Championship, which was the low score in qualifying.
But now she’s putting her clubs away until after her exams.
“I’m not goig to compete again until the end of June because all the competitions are in school time and I don’t want to take time out,” she said. In mid-August she will be taking up a place at the University of North Carolina in the USA.
For the record books: this was Elizabeth’s third course record. She has also scored 62, 11-under par, at her home course and 68, three-under, at Bloxwich.
