JACQUES LEGLISE TROPHY

CONTINENTALS OUTCLASS GB&I IN BOYS' MATCH

For the second year in a row, the Continent of Europe beat Great Britain & Ireland in the boys’ international match for the Jacques Leglise Trophy at Marianske Lazne Golf Club in the Czech Republic.
Twelve months ago, the Continent won 14-10 at Royal Porthcawl. This time it was a much more emphatic defeat for the GB&I boys – 19 ½-4 ½, a margin of victory which confirmed the impression that the present crop of teenagers on the mainland of Europe contains far more potential European Tour stars of the next decade than is the case in the British Isles.
Marius Thorp, the Norwegian teenager who won the leading amateur’s Silver Medal in this year’s Open at Royal Liverpool – but did not play in the British boys’ championship at Balgownie, also confirmed the opinion that he is the best under-18 male player around on this side of the Atlantic.
Thorp won all four matches in the Jacques Leglise Trophy match.
The very successful - for Scotland - foursomes partnership of James Byrne (Banchory) and Lewis Kirton (Newmachar) was broken up by the GB&I team management. Byrne was paired with Matthew Nixon, the new British boys champion. They lost by 5 and 4 to Tim Sluiter (Netherlands) and Llouis Garcia del Moral (Spain).
Kirton was not given a new partner. He sat out the foursomes and then lost by one hole to the Swede, Jesper Kennegard, when he was brought back into the line-up in the afternoon singles.
Byrne lost to Portuguese player P Figueirdo by one hole in the singles.
On hindsight, the composition of the GB&I team in no way reflected the fact that Scotland won the boys’ home internationals title at Lossiemouth nor that Scotland got to the final of the European boys’ team championship in Sweden, losing only to Norway who had won the world boys’ team championship in Japan a month or two earlier.
A few more Scots might have given the GB&I team a better chance but, having said that, the Continent of Europe team was a cut above anything that could have been fielded by GB&I
