JACQUES LEGLISE TROPHY

GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND BOYS THRASHED
ON FIRST DAY IN CZECH REPUBLIC

The Great Britain & Ireland boys' team suffered an unexpectedly heavy defeat on the first day of the two-day Jacques Leglise Trophy match against admittedly a very strong Continent of Europe team in the Czech Republic oday.
Spearheaded by Open Silver medal winner Marius Thorp, who would probably have won the British boys' title had he played at Balgownie recently, romped into an 11-1 lead.
After losing the foursomes 4-0, GB&I lost seven of the eight singles matches with Welshman Adam Runcie picking up the only point of the day with a 2 and 1 win over Lluis Garcia Del Moral.
North-east Aberdeen Lewis Kirton and James Byrne suffered a rare defeat in their foursomes tie, going down 2 and 1 to Victor Dubuisson and Andrea Pavan.
In the singles, Kirton, who flew over from the United States where he has enrolled at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, went down 5 and 4 to Jesper Kennegard with Byrne losing 2 and 1 to Anders Kristiansen.
