SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN MATCH-PLAY

TOP SEEDS FALL BY THE WAYSIDE IN
FIRST ROUND AT WET MACHRIHANISH

Top seed Ruth Brown (Lothianburn), winner of the stroke-play section of the four-day tournament on Friday, was tumbled out of the Scottish senior women’s amateur match-play championship at rain-swept Machrihanish this morning.
Ruth was beaten 2 and 1 by the last of the 16 qualifiers, Susan McGregor (Edzell).
The No 2 seed, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), was also sent packing early. She went out at the 19th to the No 15 qualifier, Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park).
And to complete an unhappy morning for the leading qualifiers for the match-play, No 3 seed Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay) was knocked out by Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle). Jennifer won by 5 and 4.
Defending champion Pamela Williamson (Baberton), who lost her stroke-play title on Friday, made an impressive start to the one-on-one stages. She beat Ann Smart (Banchory) by 8 and 7.
