US FUTURES TOUR NEWS

VIKKI TRAILS BY 12 SHOTS AFTER 79

Vikki Laing’s comeback appearance on the United States Futures Tour has done little to boost her confidence. She has had rounds of 75 and 79 for a 10-over-par tally of 154 over a par-72, 6,245yd course in the Futures Classic at Lost Marsh Golf Club, Hammond in Indiana.

She was one of 83 players with totals of 157 and better who made the cut into Sunday’s final round. It is her first competitive outing on the No 2 women’s pro circuit in America for several weeks.

In her second round, the 25-year-old former Curtis Cup player from Musselburgh, whose professional career has never got off the ground, had bogeys at the first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth in 42 to the turn. She steadied up on the inward half with a birdie 2 at the short 14th and bogeys at the 11th and 18th for one-over 37 for the second nine.

American Ashley Prange leads the field by two shots on two-under 142 with a pair of 71s.

Samantha Head from Bedford ran up double bogeys at the fifth and short 11th in slumping to a second-round 78, nine shots worse than her first-day score. She is now joint seventh on 147. Also on that mark is Lisa Hall from Stoke on Trent. Lisa had the same scores of 69 and 78.

Non-qualifiers included Londoner Polly Willett on 160 (81-79) and Belfast’s Brenda McLarnon on 163 (81-82).
