WEST DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

RENFREWSHIRE WIN TITLE ON HOME TURF

 

Renfrewshire, the host county,  won the West Division women’s inter-county team golf championship at East Renfrewshire Golf Club today.

After beating defending champions Lanarkshire, then Dunbartonshire & Argyll, Renfrewshire completed a clean sweep over the three days by beating Ayrshire 5 ½-3 ½ .

Ayrshire made the new champions fight all the way in the singles, two of which were halved and three of the others went to the last green.

Renfrewshire’s top player was Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) with 4 1/2pt out of a possible six. Donna was followed closely by Stirling University student Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) with 4pt.

Dunbartonshire & Argyll finished runners-up by beating Lanarkshire 5-4 in the other last-day match.

Most successful player in the tournament was Lanarkshire’s Jenna Wilson with 5 ½ pt out of six. Gemma Webster (D&A) was next best with 5pt.

Renfrewshire now go forward to the Scottish county finals at The Hirsel Golf Club, Coldstream from September 22 to 24. They have not won the Scottish title since 1987.

Foursomes: D Jackson & G McGinlay halved with L Hendry & R Kennedy; M Briggs & K O’Sullivan bt A Thompson & L Keohone 1 hole; C-M Carlton & J Jenkins bt C Malcolm & M McPherson 1 hole (2 ½ - ½).

Singles: Carlton halved with Hendry, Briggs lost to D Watt 1 hole, Jackson bt Keohone 1 hole, L Robertson halved with Malcolm, G Kyle lost to McPherson 2 and 1, McGinlay bt Kennedy 1 hole (3-3).

 

LANARKSHIRE 4, DUNBARTONSHIRE & ARGYLL 5

 

Foursomes: M Hughes & A Hendry lost to A Laing & S Bishop 4 and 2; E Cuthill & A Young lost to G Webster & K Walker 1 hole; J Wilson & S Wood bt J Galbraith & F McLean 4 and 3 (1-2).

Singles: Wilson bt Webster 1 hole, Cuthill lost to Laing 1 hole, Wood lost to Bishop 8 and 6, R Rankin lost to J Foggo 1 hole, L Lloyd bt Galbraith 3 and 2, Young bt S Cadden 3 and 2 (3-3).
