SOPHIE STUBBS WINS AT HANDSWORTH

Shropshire county player Sophie Stubbs, a 22-year-old Shifnal Golf Club member, won the Bridget Jackson Bowl 36-hole women’s open golf tournament at Handsworth Golf Club, near Birmingham yesterday (TUES).

Sophie, who has just completed her golf scholarship four-year term at the University of Minnesota, had rounds of 70 and 72 for a total of 142, which which was two under par and two under the combined CSS.

Sophie, who has four of a handicap, won by one shot from Joanne Hodge (Knowle) and Emma Lyons (West Surrey).

Curtis Cup team selections Naomi Edwards and Melissa Reid, who had entered, did not in fact play but it as still a good-class field that Miss Stubbs beat.

Anna Stubbs (Consett), the holder of the title, retired after a first-round 80.
