HEATHER MacRAE LEADS US NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Former Scottish girls' champion Heather MacRae from Dunblane led the big field at the end of the first round of the United States NJCAA women's golf championship, played in temperatures up in the 80s at Daytona Beach, Florida on Monday.
Heather, a student at McLennan College, Waco in Texas, had a score of 71 to jump two shots clear of the field in the 72-hole event to decide the best female golfer at junior colleges across America.
Heather's team-mate and fellow-Scot, Laura Walker from Nairn Dunbar, was sharing eighth place after a 79. Laura succeeded Heather as BP Scottish girls' match-play champion at Powfoot last summer.
Heather is tranferring to San Diego State University after the summer. Laura is leaving McLennan to go to Arkansas-Little Rock University, the same college as Fiona Gilbert from Carnoustie.
McLennan College finished the first day three shots ahead of Daytona Beach in the team championship.
