PALTRINIERI’S TITLE DEFENCE COMES TO AN END IN GIRLS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

18 August 2017, Enville, England: Emilie Paltrinieri's defence of the Girls British Open Amateur Championship ended in defeat by Elena Moosmann in the third round of match play at Enville today.

The Italian, who won the championship last year by beating Isobel Wardle 4&3 in the final at Royal St David's, lost by one hole to the Swiss youngster during a compelling contest earlier this morning.

A bogey by the 15-year-old on the short par three 16th proved to be decisive moment as the pair went on halve the 17th and 18th holes.

Moosmann looked to be easing a path to the semi-finals this afternoon after she played the first eleven holes in four-under-par to be 3up against Clarisse Louis of Belgium. However, a bogey on the 13th returned a hole back to the Belgian and a birdie three by Louis two holes later reduced the gap to one hole.

The match dramatically returned to all square after Moosmann bogeyed the 16th but the Swiss Amateur champion bounced back to win the final two holes, which included a 20ft eagle putt to close out the match on the 18th.

Lily May Humphries battled back from being three holes down against Spain's Teresa Diez to eventually win 2&1 in the third round before the England under 18 international swept aside her compatriot Samantha Fuller 6&5.

Humphries will now face Paula Kirner in tomorrow morning's first semi-final after the German defeated Sweden's Ellen Hutchison-Kay 2&1 in the third round before advancing to deliver an impressive 7&5 victory over Mayke Hoogeboom of the Netherlands in their quarter final match-up.

Kirner was never behind in the contest and picked up five out of six holes from the 4th to take full control of the match. A birdie on the 11th increased her lead to six holes and the match was closed out on the 13th after Hoogeboom could only make bogey.

Norway's Emilie Overas produced a good performance against Italian Clara Manzalini to win 3&2 after she narrowly overcame French youngster Lucie Malchirand by one hole in the previous round. Overas will now play Moosmann in the second semi-final.

The semi-finals (8.30am) and final (1.00pm) of the Girls Amateur Championship will be played tomorrow with each match being played over 18 holes.

AUCHTARARDER PAIR WIN LGU FOURSOMES AREA FINAL IN BRECHIN TIGHT FINISH

Auchterarder's Anne Allan and Lindsay Gray won the LGU Coronation Foursomes Area Final at Brechin Golf Club on Monday after one of the closest finishes at any of the 16 nationwide finals.
Three pairs - Ruth Mitchell and Joanne Davidson (Murcar Links) and Isobel Phillips and Helen Stewart (Peterhead) were the others - tied at the head of a huge field of 69 partnerships with 36 Stableford points.
Ann and Lindsay, with a combined handicap of 24, won the card play-off with the best inward half of 21pts. That narrowly beat 19pts by Ruth and Joanne (handicap 21) with Isobel and Helen, handicap 23, a close-up third best with inward half of 16pts.

The Auchterarder winners now go forward the Eden Course, St Andrews on September 18 for the Grand Final which will be contested by the 16 winning pairs at all the area finals.
Bonus prize for the overall winners will be a place in the 2018 Ricoh Women's British Open pro-am at Royal Lytham.

The Elie and Earlsferry pairing of Alison Turnbull and Linda Spence won the LGU Coronation Foursomes area final at Turnhouse Golf Club today, heading a big field after a very tight finish.

Mags Cargill and Sue Martin of the Dunbar club matched the winners' Stableford points total of 42 but lost out on a comparison of the inward halves.

THE LADIES’ GOLF UNION AND THE R&A COMPLETE MERGER

19 December 2016, St Andrews, Scotland

The merger of the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) and The R&A has been finalised and will come into effect from 1 January 2017.
The heads of agreement between the two organisations was signed in June leading to the integration of the LGU’s business operations and its members of staff into The R&A group of companies. An agreed governance structure has also been implemented to give LGU Board members representation on relevant R&A Committees.
The R&A will assume responsibility for staging the LGU’s championships and international matches next year, offering leading women’s professional and elite amateur golfers opportunities to play in a world class series of events. The Ricoh Women’s British Open will continue to be managed by IMG in 2017 under the existing agreement with the LGU.

Trish Wilson, Chair of the LGU, said, “The completion of the merger is a progressive and important step for the development of women’s golf.
“Bringing the two organisations together creates a platform that will allow us to develop our aspirations for women’s golf on a global stage and encourage more girls and women to play golf and become members of clubs.
“The success of the Ricoh Women’s British Open and the Curtis Cup demonstrates the growing strength of women’s golf in both the professional and amateur game and we look forward to building on this with The R&A.”

THE LADIES’ GOLF UNION NAMES VAGLIANO TEAM CAPTAINS

The Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) has announced the GB&I Vagliano team will once again be captained by Aberdeen lawyer, Elaine Farquharson-Black, who led the GB&I side to a memorable 111⁄2-81⁄2 win over the USA in the Curtis Cup at Dun Laoghaire in June this year.

Elaine, a member of Deeside Golf Club said, “I am delighted to be continuing as captain of the GB&I team for the Vagliano Trophy. I look forward to working with another talented group of golfers to prepare for the challenge of winning the match against the Continent of Europe next year.”

Cork’s Claire Coughlan-Ryan, a former Curtis Cup player who also spent a period in the professional ranks, will continue as captain of the GB&I team for the Junior Vagliano Trophy. The Junior match will be played alongside the senior international match at the same venue.

Helen Hewlett will continue as the manager for both teams.
The Vagliano Trophies will be played at Circolo Golf Bogogno in Italy from 30 June – 1 July.

Ten players, who may be amongst those playing themselves into consideration for selection to the Great Britain and Ireland Vagliano team, have been invited to join Elaine and Helen at pre-Christmas session at The Belfry on 21st & 22nd December.

c). 2 players or more depending on (b) above will be selected by the International Selection Panel.

The Junior Vagliano team of 6 players aged Under 16 on 1st January 2017 will be chosen by the International Selection Panel.

All players are encouraged to boost their chances of selection by playing in all LGU Order of Merit events prior to the team announcement.

Emma Allen, 19, England – member of the England team that won the European Ladies’ Team Championship in Iceland this year. As a student at University of Missouri, recorded a career best second place finish in the Web.com Intercollegiate Championship. Runner-up in the English Girls' U18 Open Amateur Championship in 2015.

Lianna Bailey, 19, England – finished fourth in the Royal Birkdale Scratch Trophy and the Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship this year. Also reached quarter-finals of the Spanish International Ladies' Championship.

Gemma Clews, 22, England – finished fifth in the Royal Birkdale Scratch Trophy and the Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship, and sixth in the English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 2016. Played for England in the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico. Represented GB&I in the Vagliano Trophy in 2015.

India Clyburn, 20, England – winner of Mercedes Collegiate with NC State University in 2016. Set record winning margin (12 strokes) at 2014 Scottish Girls U21 Championship. 2014 English Girls Champion. Winner of the 2014 English Girls Order of Merit.

Maria Dunne, 33, Ireland – finished third at the 2016 Scottish Ladies Open Championship and 9th and the 2016 Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship. Member of the winning GB&I Curtis Cup team in 2016.

Alice Hewson, 19, England – runner-up in The Schooner Fall Classic and tied fourth in the English Women’s Amateur in 2016. Winner of the Cougar Classic and Lady Paladin Invitational in 2015. Member of the winning GB&I Curtis Cup team in 2016. Played for England in the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico. Represented GB&I in the Vagliano Trophy in 2015.

Sophie Lamb, 19, England – winner of the 2016 British Women’s Stroke Play Championship, 5th in the English Women’s Open Amateur Match Play Championship, 6th in the English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship and 8th in the Spanish Ladies Amateur this year.

Leona Maguire, 22, Ireland – winner of the McCormack Medal in 2015 and 2016 as the world’s leading amateur golfer in the World Amateur Golf RankingTM. Won the Smyth Salver as the leading amateur at the Ricoh Women's British Open this year. Played for GB&I in the Vagliano Trophy in 2009, 2011, 2015. Olivia Mehaffey. 19, Ireland – two tournament wins in 2016, including the Irish Women's Open and Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championships. Played for GB&I in the Vagliano Trophy in 2015. Member of the winning GB&I Curtis Cup team in 2016, securing 31⁄2 points. Played in the 2013 Vagliano Trophy. 2017 Coronation Foursomes Details

The Coronation Foursomes is the leading foursomes event for club golfers in Great Britain & Ireland. The competition is open to all members of affiliated golf clubs who hold a CONGU handicap.

Established in 1953, the event has become increasingly popular in clubs where the winners may qualify for one of sixteen Area Finals.

The 2017 Grand Final will be played on Monday 18 September on the Eden Course, St Andrews. The finalists will enjoy 2 nights at the prestigious five-star Old Course Hotel Golf Resort & Spa and the chance to participate in the Pro-Am of the 2018 Ricoh Women’s British Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club.

Qualifying rounds can be held from 1 December 2016 – 17 June 2017 and entries submitted online from 1 February 2017 at www.randa.org

NATALIE JONES' EMAIL FROM AMERICA

Natalie Jones graduated from St Andrews University in June 2016 with an M.A. in Modern History and is currently studying at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, thanks to the Bobby Jones scholarship.

During her time in St Andrews Natalie was heavily involved in running the University Ladies' Golf Club and worked for the Ladies' Golf Union website. She will study in Atlanta for a year as a Bobby Jones scholar.

Natalie writes:

"I arrived in Atlanta in mid-August, and was immediately greeted with 35 degree weather and high humidity which definitely made a change from the past four years in St Andrews! The first few days were split between getting to know the campus and getting to know the Olympic-length outdoor pool right outside our door.

"The three other British students who are on the Bobby Jones scholarship and I certainly took advantage of the brilliant weather and incredible facilities.

"As a keen golfer, my time in Atlanta has already been very exciting. We are fortunate enough to receive honorary membership at East Lake Golf Club and Atlanta Athletic Club and I have taken advantage of both. The US PGA Tour Championship came to East Lake at the end of September when we were lucky enough to have front row seats to some spectacular golf which finished with Rory McIlroy 'stealing' the title after a four-hole play-off

"Alongside the abundance of golf, I am really enjoying my studies at Emory. I have chosen to take photography, journalism, French and a weight-training class this semester. I hope to go into sports marketing after my year as Bobby Jones scholar so the skills I am learning in photography and journalism in particular are giving me great experience for the future.

"My experiences in Atlanta have all been incredibly positive, exciting and adventurous, from seeing Ex-President Jimmy Carter speak and getting a guided tour around CNN from a previous scholar to attending the opening night of the Atlanta Opera and taking in America's own, tartan-obsessed Highland Games!"

Ladies Golf Union Order of Merit, updated July 7

The LGU Order of Merit runs on a 52 week cycle and uses information extracted from the World Amateur Golf Rankings with the permission of the R and A.  A minimum divisor (number of rounds) of 17 is applied. 

The Winner will be announced on completion of the Ladies' British Open Stroke Play Championship. The winner will gain a full exemption to the Ricoh Women’s British Open to be played the following year,  provided she remains an amateur.
