KIRAN MATHARU CLIMBS LEADERBOARD AT CAPE TOWN

Kiran Matharu from Leeds, who will be 29 on February 27, recaptured the form that won her the English women's amateur title and Curtis Cup team honours in 2006, when she produced the lowest round of the day - a five-under-par 67, to surge up the leaderboard to a share of second place, one behind leader Ivanna Samu, in the Cape Town Ladies Open at Royal Cape Golf Club, South Africa today.

Matharu improved by seven strokes on her first-day effort thanks to a bogey-free card which was studded with birdies at the third, fourth, fifth, 16th and 17th.
She shares second place on 141 with Sweden's Anna Sventrup (72-69), one behind South African leader Ivanna Samu (68-72 for 140).

Another English player, Hayley Davis, making her debut in South Africa, did not fare so well. She followed up a promising first round of 69 with a 79 to be T13 on 148.
