JANE TURNER WINS HER FIRST LET ACCESS TOURNAMENT

Scotland’s Jane Turner recorded her first win on the LET Access Series with a wire-to wire victory at the Bossey Ladies Championship at Golf de Bossey, near Geneva.

Turner shot a closing even par 71 to finish at 7 under, in a tie with Noemi Jimenez, who had already posted a final round 67 to lead in the clubhouse. The Scot had the slimmest of leads at the start of the day and faltered during the middle of her round, losing her advantage. In the past, Turner may have faltered but she rallied to record three birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th to tie Jimenez at 7 under. The Spaniard then bogeyed the 17th but birdied the 18th to draw level with Turner, who parred her way in from the 14th.

Both players could not be split after the first play-off hole and it was Jimenez who found trouble on the second play-off hole, not able to reach the par four 400-yard 18th hole with her second shot and failing to get up and down from 40 yards. Turner hit the green in two and rolled her first putt up to about a foot but admitted to being very nervous over the putt but holed with no problem and the title belonged to her.

“It’s amazing, it’s taken four years so this one…it feels brilliant. And that I had to do it in a play-off, there were a lot of nerves in that last putt," Turner commented.

“The fact that I kept control of it as well. In the past I have led after the first round and dropped away but this week I managed to keep hold of it. I was actually three over par after 11 holes and managed to bring it back with three birdies. I was missing fairways, making silly mistakes. I knocked it in to three feet on the 11th hole and holed that and that was it, I was back in control.“

Natalia Escuriola of Spain finished on her own in 3rd place, scoring a final day one over par 72 for a 5 under total, 208. England’s Lauren Taylor improved each day with rounds of 72, 69 and 68 for a 4 under par total and 4th position.

Order of Merit leader Meghan Maclaren shot the round of the day, 65, to finish in 5th place at 3 under and consolidate her position in the ranking.

The LET Access Series now takes a break until the penultimate event of the season, the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa, which takes place from the 28 – 30 September.

PALTRINIERI’S TITLE DEFENCE COMES TO AN END IN GIRLS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

LGU and RandA Lockup

18 August 2017, Enville, England: Emilie Paltrinieri's defence of the Girls British Open Amateur Championship ended in defeat by Elena Moosmann in the third round of match play at Enville today.
The Italian, who won the championship last year by beating Isobel Wardle 4&3 in the final at Royal St David's, lost by one hole to the Swiss youngster during a compelling contest earlier this morning.
A bogey by the 15-year-old on the short par three 16th proved to be decisive moment as the pair went on halve the 17th and 18th holes.
Moosmann looked to be easing a path to the semi-finals this afternoon after she played the first eleven holes in four-under-par to be 3up against Clarisse Louis of Belgium. However, a bogey on the 13th returned a hole back to the Belgian and a birdie three by Louis two holes later reduced the gap to one hole.
The match dramatically returned to all square after Moosmann bogeyed the 16th but the Swiss Amateur champion bounced back to win the final two holes, which included a 20ft eagle putt to close out the match on the 18th.
Lily May Humphries battled back from being three holes down against Spain's Teresa Diez to eventually win 2&1 in the third round before the England under 18 international swept aside her compatriot Samantha Fuller 6&5.
Humphries will now face Paula Kirner in tomorrow morning's first semi-final after the German defeated Sweden's Ellen Hutchison-Kay 2&1 in the third round before advancing to deliver an impressive 7&5 victory over Mayke Hoogeboom of the Netherlands in their quarter final match-up.
Kirner was never behind in the contest and picked up five out of six holes from the 4th to take full control of the match. A birdie on the 11th increased her lead to six holes and the match was closed out on the 13th after Hoogeboom could only make bogey.
Norway's Emilie Overas produced a good performance against Italian Clara Manzalini to win 3&2 after she narrowly overcame French youngster Lucie Malchirand by one hole in the previous round. Overas will now play Moosmann in the second semi-final.
The semi-finals (8.30am) and final (1.00pm) of the Girls Amateur Championship will be played tomorrow with each match being played over 18 holes.

Key Quotes:
Lily May Humphries
"It feels great to get through to the semi-finals and it's an improvement from last year when I got to the quarter finals.
"This afternoon was the best I've played in the whole tournament so far. I didn't make any mistakes out there. The first hole was a real highlight, I drove it right down the middle of the fairway and holed a thirty-footer for eagle.
"I hope to get to the final and win it, I'm playing well."
Paula Kirner
"I can't believe it, it's so great to have made the semi-finals. I played well and my putting was very good. I had two great birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. I had a bit of luck as well, it was a difficult match. I hope to go out and have a lot of fun tomorrow."
Emilie Overas
"I'm almost shaking right now, I don't really understand it, but I'm happy. I played very solidly and consistently. Clara is a great player but I was patient out there and played a lot of good shots. I kept fighting and it's good to have won. Tomorrow I will just try to play my game like I have all week."
Elena Moosmann
"I feel really happy to have won today. The putt on the last hole was big but I wasn't nervous about it. Apart from a couple of holes, I played really well."

RECAP ON THURSDAY PLAY IN BRITISH GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM R AND A WEBSITE

Ellen Hutchison-Kay was the star performer during the first and second rounds of match play in the Girls British Open Amateur Championship at Enville today (Thursday).

The Swede notched up two resounding 7 and 6 victories, beating Switzerland's Chloe Grand in her last 64 tie before defeating French youngster Lilas Pinthier to reach Friday's third round.

Swede in form

"I played very well and holed a lot of birdies and long putts", said Hutchison-Kay.

"I got into a good rhythm and hope to continue tomorrow. The course is in great condition, I really like it and it fits my game really well.

"I want to win the championship and I'm going to keep my focus on getting near to the pin and making good birdies."

Family duel denied

Samantha Fuller was also a stand-out performer. After overcoming Italian Maeve Rossi 4 and 3 in the first round, the England international went on to achieve a fine 7 and 6 win in the second round over Scotland's Shannon McWilliam, the leading player from stroke play qualifying.

The 18-year-old Samantha , who will set off to start her university studies after the championship, was motivated by the prospect of setting up an all-family affair against younger sister Annabell, in the next round.

However, it wasn't to be for the Fullers as Annabell lost on the second extra hole to Tereza Kozeluhuva of Czech Republic.

"I putted really well and felt like I holed everything", said Fuller. "My putting was great and I was really pumped for this afternoon. I felt bad for Shannon as everything went my way.

"I'm ready for the next round and whatever happens, happens. I'm going out to win".

Humphries confident

Fuller's international team-mate Lily May Humphries continued the strong showing from the England contingent through to the match play stage with two excellent victories. The 15-year-old beat Spain's Carolina Lopez-Chacarra 4 and 3 followed by a 6 and 5 success against Jessica Bailey.

"It was a very enjoyable match this afternoon and I played much better than this morning. I was solid off the tee and my short game has been good all day", said Humphries.

"I got to the quarter-finals last year and I'd like to get to the final this week. I'm confident I can win big matches and get the job done."

Wardle bows out

Last year's runner-up Isobel Wardle fell short of her target of reaching the final for a second successive year, losing to Mimi Rhodes in a comprehensive 6 and 5 second -ound defeat.

There were also good wins for Lucie Malchirand (4 and 3 against Emily Price) and Paula Kirner (3 and 2 against Carys Worby) and they will take their place in the third round.

Defending champion in good shape

In the last match out on the course, defending champion Emilie Paltrinieri was three up after nine holes against Germany's Sarina Schmidt and clinched victory on the inward half.

Captains Announce Friday Foursomes Pairings

First Foursome
Lexi Thompson and Christie Kerr v Melissa Reid and Charley Hull

DES MOINES, Iowa (August 17, 2017) – Melissa Reid and Charley Hull will lead out Team Europe in the opening foursomes match at Des Moines Golf & Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday morning as Europe begins its quest for a sixth victory in The Solheim Cup.

The English duo defeated Michelle Wie and Brittany Lincicome 2&1 in the second match on the first day at St. Leon-Rot in Germany two years ago and they are determined to make a similar statement by beating Cristie Kerr and Lexi Thompson in the biennial competition against the United States this year.

Hull is undefeated in foursomes, having won both of her matches in 2015, while Reid also has a strong record with two wins in 2015 and one loss overall.

The pair will face Cristie Kerr and Lexi Thompson, who are also undefeated together in foursomes having won two matches in Germany.

Second Foursome
Lizette Salas and Danielle Kang v Carlota Ciganda and Caroline Masson
The foursomes go out in 12 minute intervals and next on the course are Carlota Ciganda of Spain and Caroline Masson of Germany, who will be up against United States team rookie Danielle Kang and Lizette Salas.

Ciganda and Masson are a first-time pairing and Ciganda claimed a point in her first foursomes match of the competition two years ago.

Third Foursome
Austin Ernst and Paula Creamer v Anna Nordqvist and Georgia Hall

There is an intriguing third match featuring two rookies, with first-time European team member Georgia Hall of England and the experienced Anna Nordqvist from Sweden teaming up against United States team rookie Austin Ernst and Paula Creamer, who has an impressive overall foursomes record (6-3-3) meaning that she has won six matches, lost three and halved three, for 7 ½ points in the format.

Add caption
Gerina Piller and Stacy Lewis v Karine Icher and Catriona Matthew

Karine Icher of France and Catriona Matthew from Scotland together won their day two four-ball match in 2015 and that partnership will be renewed in the fourth match against Stacy Lewis and Gerina Piller. Icher has won one foursomes match, while Matthew has won eight points in the format overall.

Lewis and Piller also formed a strong partnership in 2015 when they won both of their day two foursomes and four-ball matches together, meaning that there will be plenty of experience on the course on Friday morning.

European Captain Annika Sorenstam said that she had wanted to introduce just one of her four rookies on the first morning and selected Hall, who is one of the team's most in-form players. However, Inkster opted to send out two of her three rookies in Austin Ernst and Danielle Kang. She also added that she did not want to play any of her 12 team members the maximum of five times over the three days.

Returning Captain Inkster said: "I didn't do anything differently to last time and I haven't changed my philosophy on the pairings."

Sorenstam said: "This is my first captaincy and you want to be ready to go and not forget anything, but we are ready to go."

The two captains went on to confirm both their teams were ready for the start of the 15th playing of The Solheim Cup and were champing at the bit after welcoming huge, vociferous galleries for Thursday's practice round.

"We are not really used to playing in front of that many people," Inkster said, adding that she did not think that her team would need any motivation to encourage the spectators to make some noise. "I think our team is more than boisterous. It's a great experience that these players will have for a life time."

At the Opening Ceremony, Sorenstam told her players that the passion will be intense and stated: "We will represent the game with courtesy, consideration and class.

"In that spirit, I want to wish Juli Inkster and her team the best of luck. Juli and I have shared many memories over the years as friends and as competitors and I have no doubt that this week will be no different.

"We all come from different cultures and backgrounds but we share the common bond and that's for the love of the game. We are going to share some amazing memories and first of all, we look forward to the challenge ahead."

The atmosphere is expected to be electric on the first tee for the Friday foursomes as the two teams begin the contest for honour, pride and the coveted Solheim Cup.
