Scottish women's amateur championship

No play at Balgownie before 12.30: Danger of

Second Qualifying round being cancelled

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Winds gusting over 40pmph at Balgownie links may result in the cancellation of today's second qualifying round in the 103rd Scottish women's amateur championship at the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club venue.
Not a blow has been struck so far. Play was scheduled to start at 9.30am. The trouble is that on exposed greens such as the first, the balls are being blown off the putting surfaces.
A decision will be taken around noon with a view to play starting at 12.30. The big hope is that the wind will drop.
If it doesn't and play does not start at 12.30 it is more than likely that the 32 qualifiers for the championship match-play stages will be decided on Tuesday's first qualifying round.
There just would not be time to get the field of 70 players round with a possible play-off for the last qualifying place or places to add on to the regulation play.
If the second Q round is scrapped, then, if and when the wind drops, there would be a play-off of the four players on 88 for the last three of the 32 match-play places.
The four are: Molly Richmond (Strathaven), Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne), Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead) and Margo Gardner (Linlithgow).
