FIONA LIDDELL MAKES GOOD START AT TEMPE, ARIZONA

Former Scottish girls champion Fiona Liddell, now a student at Baylor University, Texas, shot her best round so far on the US college circuit - a three-under-par 69 - to be T3 on Friday in strong field of 81 players at the Ping/ASU Invitational three-round tournament over the Karsten course at Tempe, Arizona.

Fiona, daughter of a Germany-based Scottish club pro and a German mother, had a eagle 3 at the fifth and birdies at the fourth, 13th and short 16th in halves of 34-34.

Liddell is five behind the leader, American Curtis Cup player Monica Vaughan whose brilliant round of 64 over a 6,337yd course gave her a four-stroke lead from Baylor's Dylan Kim.

Jess Meek (Missouri University) from Carnoustie) and Curtis Cup player Olivia Mehaffey (Arizona State) are T18 on the par 72 mark.

Chloe Weir (Kansas State) is T26 on 73.

Elizabeth Prior (UNLV) had a 74 for a T37 overnight position.

Connie Jaffrey from Kilwinning, a student at Kansas State, started well but came off the rails with an inward half of 41 en route to a 75. She birdied the second, fifth, sixth (out in 34) and then the 12th before she had a cluster of bogeys on the inward half.

Jess Meek team-mate Emma Alley is T50 after a 76.

Former Scottish women's champion Clara Young, another Missouri University player, disappointed with a 78 for T60 position.
