UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS 2016 LADIES INVITATIONAL - RENEE POWELL CUP

Prize-winners

Last weekend the University of St Andrews Ladies Golf Club hosted the 2016 Ladies Invitational. The new 2016/17 Club President, Annie Rickard, invited competitors to St Andrews to compete for the Renee Powell Cup and Carol Kaufman shield - formerly known as the St Andrews Invitational.

The 6th iteration of the tournament saw schoolgirls and university students from all across Europe travel to the famous home of golf to compete on the St Andrews Links. This year Club President Annie Rickard introduced an extra round to the second day, turning the tournament into a 54-hole stroke play event. This has allowed the Ladies Invitational to be submitted as a World Amateur Golf Ranking event, which will hopefully help to attract a wider and more international field in 2017.

Over the two days, competitors played the New, Eden, and Strathtyrum Courses, with tee-times very kindly supported by the Links Trust. Scotland’s Kirsty Brodie (from Webster’s High School, Angus) won the Gross Division following impressive rounds of 76, 71, and 73, which afforded her a three-day total of 4 over par and making her the first recipient of The Renee Powell Cup. Molly Richmond (from Strathaven Academy) was close behind, earning runner up of the Gross Division with 7 over par.

Katie Darling, a current student at the University of St Andrews, won the Net Division with a fantastic -23 total and was presented with the Carol Kaufman Shield. England’s Rachel Alford (from Aston University, Birmingham) was only 7 strokes behind as runner up of the Net Division.

The tournament was a fantastic opportunity for girls to experience playing the infamous Links courses, meet fellow golfers, and attend a tour of the University. We were very fortunate with the weather over the two days of competition and many of the girls commented on having enjoyed a fantastic weekend.

Special thanks goes to Renee Powell and Carol Kaufman for their continued support of the event, along with the Links Trust for hosting the tournament and the R&A for funding support.

It was a great pleasure to have the new principal of the University of St Andrews, Professor Sally Mapstone and Lady Angela Bonnallack join the competitors and the University’s Ladies Golf Club committee over lunch whilst the cut was being made.

The tournament finished with a prize giving ceremony, overseen by Vice Principal Professor Verity Brown and President of the Athletic Union, Ben Peddie.
