Batty retains title at Stirling International and Shepherd holds nerve to win men’s title

Gemma Batty (Stirling University)
Gemma Batty (Stirling University) shot a final round 78 to secure victory by 3 shots from Chloe Goadby (Stirling University) and Alexa Hammer (St Andrews).
Chloe, on her 19th birthday, had the best round of the day with a 73 to take second place after a birdie on the last but a 6 on the par 3 8th stopped her early momentum and left her too much to do on the back nine.
Alexa’s 77 was enough to secure her the final podium position. With a field of 21 golfers, this was one of the strongest starting fields in recent BUCS Tour events and a great start to the year on the women’s side.
James Glenn (Durham University) shot a superb level par 70 to climb the field and finish in the runner up position in the men’s competition,
However, the winner of the competition came from the final grouping as Laird Shepherd (Stirling University) held his nerve (including escaping with a bogey on 17 by chipping in) to shoot a 76 and win by one shot.

Sam Locke (Scottish Golf) rounded out the top three with a second consecutive 75 to finish on eight over par.
Mention must go to the round of the day, the only man to break par, Andrew Davidson who shot a one under 70 to finish in 9th place. With a 73 in round 2, Andrew was left to rue a slow start that put him out of contention for the main prize.
The BUCS Tour is now well and truly underway for the 2016/17 season and attention will now move to the North Eastern and Ladybank Tournaments at the end of the month.
