Championship

NEWS RELEASE FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY

Duke University third-year student,  Lisa Maguire, 21, twin of World No 1 lady amateur Leona, has won the Ulster Women’s Open Championship at the Royal Belfast Golf Club.

A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire registered four match-play wins after earning second seed status in stroke play qualifying with rounds of 76 and 77.

Lisa teed off the match-play stages with a 4 and 2 victory over the experiences senior Ireland women's international player Helen Jones and then knocked off Jenny Young 2 and 1 in the afternoon.  In the semi-finals, Lisa registered a par on the 19th hole to beat Georgia Carr.

In the final, Lisa came up  against former Irish international Aedin Murphy, who won her home club’s Scratch Cup earlier in the season and was third in the stroke-play qualifying at Royal Belfast.

Maguire went two up through nine and was three-up after 12, after registering a par.  After dropping hole No. 13, Maguire and Murphy halved the par fives 15 and 16 with birdies and pars to leave Maguire dormie with two holes remaining.

After leaving her approach shot just short of the green, Lisa chipped her ball to two feet for par.  Murphy’s birdie attempt edged past the hole and the championship and Maguire was the title winner by 3 and 1.
