Tracey and Amelia Williamson complete

Mothers and Daughters' title treble

By Jo Thesiger

Favourites, Tracey and Amelia Williamson, from Royal Cromer in Norfolk, fulfilled all expectations as they strode comfortably to their third successive victory by a NINE-stroke margin in the Mothers and Daughters’ 27-hole foursomes at Royal Mid Surrey on Saturday.

On a day that felt more like Winter than Spring, with an arctic chill, gusty wind and standing water on the fairways, the Norfolk pair’s powerful games made them well equipped to cope with the conditions which lengthened the course significantly.

The Williamson’s solid morning round of six-over-par, 77, gave them a four-shot lead  over three pairs from Walton Heath, Christine and Charlotte Griffith, Jill Thornhill and Caroline Weeks, both past winners, and Alison and Nicola Taylor, all lying on 81.

However, Amelia Williamson admitted their score could have been so much better if her putter had been working and they even finished their mornings work with an untidy double-bogey, seven, on the final hole.

In the afternoon, the Norfolk pair responded calmly and emphatically, leading from the front to produce a perfect score of level par, 35, over the remaining nine holes.  The highlight was an outstanding birdie on the 390 yard, par 4, 4th hole, playing into the wind; it was pretty much unreachable for most competitors but not for the Williamsons!  They made it look easy -after a long drive, Amelia found the green with a 4-iron and then her mother slotted a twenty-five footer.

Walton Heath’s Alison Taylor, who has the luxury of three golfing daughters to rotate, had been runner-up with middle daughter, Nicola, on the past two occasions playing together.  Although, determined to put their names on the honours board, they knew the Williamsons would be very hard to beat.  After shaky start this year, dropping six shots in the first five holes,  Alison sunk a 30 foot putt from off the green at the 8th hole, for a fantastic birdie, three, which changed their fortunes to put them in contention.

Although the Taylors played well in the afternoon in difficult conditions, they simply could not match the Williamson’s immaculate scoring, finishing in second spot once again and missing out in the end by a convincing nine shots
It was a repeat of the 2014 result but on that occasion the deficit was only one and Amelia was just thirteen.  The strength of the Williamsons partnership looks unassailable for the foreseeable future, as the Taylors ruefully acknowledged they had missed their chance!
