Alex Peters wins Roehampton Gold Cup

by 4 strokes on her debut appearance

FROM CAROLINE SCALLON
Alexandra Peters, 22, from Shifnal, Shropshire on

Saturday won the prestigious 89th Roehampton Gold

Challenge Cup, open to lady and girls amateurs and

professional golfers, on her maiden appearance at

the southwest London venue.

Following torrential rain on the previous day, which necessitated practice rounds being cancelled and players being called in off the flooding greens, the weather was far more favourable on Saturday than had been predicted.
With a gentle north wind bringing in some very cold air, the course was playing long and the balls were holding on the greens.
A high class international field of 59 competitors assembled to tackle the parkland course with its well-guarded greens. As well as home England players, others came from Wales, Scotland and for the first time, from Belgium and the USA.
Two Roehampton players were in the field – sisters Samantha and Annabel Fuller – the latter having come a very close second in the recent Scottish Under 16 Championship.

Alex Peters, a former England amatuer international and in her second year as a Ladies European Tour member,  won the Gold Cup by four strokes with rounds of 71 and  70 – for a total of 141.
She was the only player to finish under par for the 36 holes.
Second was Jessica Bradley, a professional from Tiverton, on 145 (74,71) together with a Belgian professional from Ypres, Laurence Herman, also on 145 (71,74).
Kent player Sharna Dutrieux from Wrotham Heath was leading amateur on 147 (71,76).
The 2015 winner Hannah Ralph, professional from Cowdray Park, put up a good defence of her title on 148 (76,72) – five shots lower than her winning score last year.   The low round of the day prize went to Wales and Surrey amateur Katherine O’Connor from West Byfleet with a record three-under-par 69 in the afternoon.
 TWO SCOTS IN LEADING TEN
Former Renfrewshire women's county champion Iona Stephen (Wentworth) and Heather MacRae, now attached to Archerfield Links, finished tied sixth and 10th respectively in a field of 59, writes Colin Farquharson
Stephen had rounds of 72 and 77 for 149.
MacRae, playing the southwest London course for the first time in several years, shot rounds of 79 and 72 for 151 - 10 shots behind the winner
