MacLaren wins one, loses one in Portugal

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The England-Wales pairing of Meghan MacLaren and Chloe Williams, a substitute for the sick Olivia Mehaffey, and representing Europe in the inaugural Patsy Hankins match lost by 5 and 4 to Asia Pacific's Princess Mary Superal and Paphanqkom Tavatanakit in the morning foursomes on Day 1 at the northern Portuguese venue of Vidago Palace.
The four-ball matches in the afternoon were curtailed by darkness and will not finish until Thursday morning but MacLaren, with a new partner, Germany's Laura Funfstuck, were impressive 5 and 4 winners over Julianne Alvarez and Tian Qui.
Asia-Pacific took the morning foursomes 4-1.
In the afternoon play, Europe have won one tie and Asia Pacific another, so the overall score has advanced to Asia-Pacific leading 5-2 with three ties to finish.
Europe lead in two of them, Asia Pacific in one so the projected scoreline when the Day 1 matches are finished is: Asia-Pacific 6, Europe 4.
