Andrew Wilson, Miranda Brain win student

  honours at Dundonald Links

 REPORT FROM BEN PHILIP

Andrew Wilson (Northumbria) and Miranda Brain (St Andrews) made light of the poor weather on day two of the SSS/BUCS 10th Dundonald Tournament to claim the Men’s and Women’s titles respectively.
Miranda doubled up as part of the victorious University of St. Andrews Women’s Team (+5) while the University of Stirling (+1) took home the Men’s Team prize.

Clear skies were the problem for the first day of the event as a hard frost led to a two-hour delay to the first tee time. With a tight schedule of 36 holes in one day and a field of 80 players, the decision was made to cancel the second round and cut the event to 36 holes.

Luckily the clear skies stayed over the course for the rest of the day providing perfect weather for the players. In the men’s draw, James Wilson (Stirling University) had the round of the day with a three under 69 and he was joined under par by Matthew Hayes (Northumbria University), who shot 70. Chasing hard on their heels were  eight players on two over.

On the women’s side, the leaderboard was a lot closer – Ailsa Summers (St. Andrews) led the way with a one over 73, while right behind her was Nastja Banovec (Abertay), on 74, and Chloe Goadby (Stirling) rounded out the podium positions with a 75.

Day 2 dawned milder but wetter and the conditions only worsened as the day went on as the wind picked up and the rain steadily increased. The women’s draw was the first decided and it was Miranda Brain (pictured above) who played the conditions the best, carding a one over 73 for the round, and 149 (+5) for the tournament.
No one in the final group was able to match that as Nastja Banovec (+8) and Chloe Goady (+9) both carded 78s to take second and third respectively.

On the men’s side, Michael Howard (Edinburgh) was out first and went round in level par to set the early clubhouse target of 150 (+6).
It took until the final two groups for anyone to come in under Michael (7th) as the top two finishers went under par on the day. James Wilson (LEVEL) wasn’t able to replicate his first day performance but a 75 was good enough for third place. George Burns (St Andrews) shot an impressive 70 to join James and that second round secured him the Runner,-up spot.
However, victory went to the man who shot the round of the tournament, a 68 from Andrew Wilson (pictured at top of the article) seeing him finish on 142 (-2) and take first place.
