Europe win singles, but lose to USA in the Hickory Grail

GILLIAN KIRKWOOD REPORTS FROM NEW JERSEY
This week Hickory golfers from USA and Europe competed in the 9th Hickory Grail match at Baltusrol Golf Club, New Jersey.
The first day's play of Foursomes and Four-balls was rather a whitewash for America.  Europe won only one match out of six in the morning Foursomes and gained only 1/2 a point in the afternoon Four-balls.

The score of 10 1/2 to 1 1/2 in favour of the United States was a steep score line to overcome.
However, the European team, which consisted of eight Swedes and the rest from GB and I rallied this morning (Tuesday) to win the Singles series by 6 1/2 matches to 5 1/2 and make the  final score line of 8 to 16 rather more respectable.

Essex girl Georgina keeps up the good work in

Pat Bradley Invitational

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida - Essex girl Georgina Blackman, a second-year student at Western Kentucky University, continued her strong performance at the 38th Annual Pat Bradley Invitational, firing her lowest round of the fall with a second-round 70 to tie for second place, heading into the final round of the tournament.
The Lady Toppers followed suit as a team, tallying their second-lowest autumn round  with a 296, moving up one spot on the team leaderboard to seventh with a two-round score of 26-over 602 (306-296).
WKU’s 296 was the fourth-best second round among the 14 competing teams on the Lakewood Ranch Country Club. Toledo owns a one-stroke lead at 12-over 588 over Memphis through the first two rounds.
"It was great to carry over the momentum that we gained on Sunday into today with our strong round," head coach Adam Gary said. "With seven teams shooting under 300 today, we knew that we had to have a low round to stay in the competition and we did just that.”

Blackman, pictured, a sophomore from Essex, England, finished with just one bogey on Monday and birdied her final two holes to move into a tie for second with Daytona State’s Ji Sun Kang and Sathika Ruenreong of Toledo at even par through two rounds (74-70). The trio trails individual leader Leighann Cabush of Memphis by two strokes moving into Tuesday’s final round.
Ellinor Haag’s second-round 73 was her fourth-best round of the fall and helped her jump 11 spots on the individual leaderboard on Monday. The senior is seeking her fourth top-10 finish in five events this fall and will be paired with FGCU’s Mei Khuan Yong and Bradley’s Ally Scaccia for the final round.
Emily Alexander notched her second-best round this fall with a 74 on Monday, moving up 17 spots into a tie for 35th. The Glasgow, Kentucky native owns a pair of top-20 finishes this fall, including a seventh-place finish at the Bluegrass Kickoff as an individual on Aug. 31.
Tuesday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. CT.
The Cypress Links Course at Lakewood Ranch Country Club, opened in 2001, is an 18-hole, Arnold Palmer-designed course featuring wide golf corridors and delivering a more forgiving and rewarding experience for golfers of all skill levels.

PGA, Chris Langford

Chris Langford makes history at Thorpeness, Suffolk - first female professional at club
Former player and founder member of the Ladies European Tour, Chris Langford, has become the first women professional at Thorpeness Golf Club in the 93 year history of the Suffolk club.
Chris, aged 58, took over recently as senior professional from Frank Hill, aged 72 ,who has just retired after 20 years at the club. The club was founded in 1922.
“I am delighted to be making history as the club’s first woman professional and am honoured to be following in the footsteps of Frank. Suffolk is a wonderful place to live and Thorpeness is a very special part of the county, I feel very privileged to have been asked to take on this role,” she said.
For the last 18 months, Chris has been able to get to know Thorpeness and Suffolk as she has been using the course as her UK base for her golf schools and coaching.
Whilst her area of expertise is very much in women's game, she does teach a number of men and she will be joining forces with Frank Hill to offer a unique golfing masterclass for couples, a two- day coaching and playing experience with some marriage guidance thrown in for good measure.
Chris has an impressive golfing CV to take into her new role. Amongst many accolades she was a founder member of the Ladies European Tour (LET ) and won five tournaments as well as having served as chairman of the tour, the women's PGA and on the board of the PGA.
In addition she has run her own coaching and golf school business since 1994, she was National Coach to the Welsh Ladies' Golf Union from 2001-2008. She is currently a Golf Ambassador for the Bermuda Tourist Authority where she hosts two golf events every year. The Women and Golf Bermuda Trophy has become the biggest non-US based golf tourism event on the island.
Chris was the first woman to be appointed at a committee run/private members club, Clevedon in Somerset. and among other places has worked as head professional at Desert Springs, Spain and Abbotsley in Cambridgeshire.
In 2005 she was the first woman professional to be awarded Advanced Fellow of the PGA
Chris will be organising a full programme of events for golfers of all ages and stages at Thorpeness in 2016 , particularly women golfers! Including the Thorpeness Team Trophy in August which was started this year.
