Scots men have a nightmare opening day in The Spirit International

Jess Meek and Rachael Taylor start with a better-ball 69 in Texas
Scotland's Ewen Ferguson and Grant Forrest are lying last of 20 after a disastrous opening round in The Spirit International better-ball men's tournament at Whispering Pines GC.
The Scots, both Walker Cup players, could do no better than a better-ball, one over par 73 - 10 shots behind pacemakers, Norway.

Former British boys champion Ferguson (pictured) from Bearsden and North Berwick's Forrest, a past Scottish amateur champion, started well with better-ball birdies at the first and seconand they also birdied the sixth and 12th but they had better-ball bogeys at the fourth, 10th and 16th and a better-ball double bogey 6 at the 13th
England's Scott Gregory and Jonathan Thomson combined for a 67 and are joint seventh
In the women's competition, Scotland's Jess Meek and Rachael Taylor, both students at USA universities, did better than England's GB and I internationals, Hayley Davis and Bronte Law who are also USA college students.
Meek (pictured) and Taylor had a three-under-69 with better-ball birdies at the long second, 11th, 12th and 18th. On the downside they had a better-ball bogey at the 15th.
The Scots girls are sharing 11th place.
Davis and Law shot a better-ball 70 after faltering badly over the last few holes. They had better-ball bogeys at three of the last six holes. That means neither could get even a par at these holes!
The English pair are joint 16th.
Belgium (Lesley Cloots and Charlotte de Corte) and Mexico (Maria Fassi and Ana Paula Valdes) share the women's lead on eight-under 64.
