British women's open amateur championship: 64 will advance to match-play

SCOTTISH CHAMPION CLARA FACES MAJOR FIGHT TO QUALIFY

New Scottish women's amateur champion Clara Young (North Berwick), pictured left, has a major fight on her hands if she is to figure among the 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the 112th British women's open amateur golf championship on the links of Portstewart Golf Club on Northern Ireland's Causeway Coast.
Clara shot a first round of five-over-par 78 in almost windless conditions, in contrast to what it has been like every practice day since the field of 144 arrived.
So Young is tied 96th with 18 holes to claw her way up more than 30 places on the scoreboard after a day of low scoring, led by an 18-year-old Swede from Gothenburg, Elin Esborn, who shot, in the evening sunshine, shot a bogey-free, seven-under 66 over the par-73 lay-out, knocking the favourite and World No 1 female amateur, Leona Maguire, off the top of the leaderboard. Leona had a 67.
Monifieth's Heather Munro, home for the summer from college in the US, is the best placed Scot in joint 11th position on two-under 71. Heather bagged five birdies in all.
Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) and Jess Meek (Carnoustie Ladies) are in the qualifying comfort zone after returning scores of 73 and 74 respectively.
Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) is joint 46th after a 75 which included a double bogey 6 at the ninth and a double bogey 7 at the long 17th.
Germany-based Fiona Liddell is T60 with a 76. She's walking the tightrope in the second qualifying round.
Last year's Scottish champion Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) and young Chloe Goadby (St Regulus), both on 77, are joint 77th and have to find an extra gear to make the match-play qualifiers.
Iona Stephen (Wentworth) is T96th with a 78, alongside Clara Young, and prospects look bleak for Germany-based Rachael Taylor who had an 80, and also Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) who had an 82.
