Leona Maguire now No 2 in World Rankings
- but she won't play for GB and I in Vagliano
Trophy match in Belfast in June

Leona Maguire's brilliant run of form for Duke University on the United States women's college circuit - she is ranked No 1 on it - has seen her rise to No 2 in the updated Women's World Amateur Rankings issued today by the R and A,
writes Colin Farquharson.

Her Duke team-mate, Celine Boutier, has fallen from the No 1 position on the WAGR to No 8.
What a body blow to Great Britain and Ireland's hopes of wresting the Vagliano Trophy out of the grasp of the Continent of Europe in the two-day match at Malone Golf Club in June that Leona will not be available for selection.
The Ladies Golf Union has confirmed this without giving any reason for this state of affairs.

There may be a simple explanation but until someone provides it, it is a baffling mystery why the second best female amateur in the world won't play in an international match that is second only to the Curtis Cup and only a few miles north of where the Maguires live at Cavan.
The top 20 of the WAGR is packed with players who WILL be playing in the Vagliano Trophy match - but for the Continent!
Apart from Leona Maguire, the only GB and I player in the top 30 is Bronte Law from Bramhall, Cheshire and, like Leona, a student in the States. Bronte is world ranked No 10.

The top four eligible players in the WAGR at the LGU's selection cut-off point in May will gain automatic selection to the GB and I team. At the moment that would be Bronte Law, Hayley Davis,
Alice Hewson and Meghan MacLaren.
