SKARPNORD LEADS IN LALLA MERYEM CUP IN MOROCCO

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR
By BETHAN CUTLER, LET Media Manager
Norway’s Marianne Skarpnord vaulted up to pole position on the leader board at the Lalla Meryem Cup at Agadir, Morocco today with a second round of six under par 65.
The 26-year-old from Sarpsborg, who was the British girls' open champion in 2003 at Newport and won twice on the Ladies European Tour in 2009, moved to seven under par at Golf de l’Ocean after strong winds and the threat of lightning delayed the start of play by five hours.
Skarpnord wasted little time after starting from the first tee at 1.50pm. She picked up five birdies and dropped just one shot on the front nine, before adding three more birdies and just one blemish on the back.
A solid birdie on the par-three 16th gave her a one stroke advantage over first round co-leader Jade Schaeffer, who was happy to be in the clubhouse with a two under par round of 69 just before play ended for the day due to darkness at 6.44pm local time.
Skarpnord took four months out from the game last year with a back injury and has since struggled to find the form that saw her finish fourth on the 2009 LET money list. Despite striking the ball well, the putts haven’t been dropping - until now.
Conveniently, her boyfriend, European Tour player Richard Green, who is competing in the Hassan Trophy a mile along the road at Golf du Palais this week, was on hand to offer a putting lesson after the first round.
“Greenie was here last night and helped me a bit. I was a bit frustrated,” Skarpnord said. “He helped me a bit and he’s got a theory on what he feels works and I’m trying that out and hopefully it will work at the end of the day.” Another contributing factor could be that her caddie, Brian Shezi, is reading the lines on the greens (Marianne and Brian are pictured above), and Skarpnord added: “To be honest I’ve been hitting the ball awesome for a few months now, I just haven’t made any putts. I’ve really been struggling with the putting so the game from tee to green has been there for a long time, it’s just I haven’t made anything and it’s really destroyed everything. When you putt badly for so long it just affects your game.”
French 25-year-old Schaeffer, who claimed her second LET title at the Prague Golf Masters in September, felt that she was in the ideal position on the leader board.
“Now maybe I prefer my situation because I’m just one shot behind Marianne Skarpnord and I attack now: I hope!” she said. “I have a good feeling with this course and with my game and I try always to win, but we’ll see.”
Conditions changed completely from morning to afternoon as the winds died down and temperatures dropped but it was still an exhausting day for the early starters who had been at the course since 7am. Spanish rookie Carlota Ciganda and Sweden’s Linda Wessberg were both in the clubhouse having ended on four under, while Frenchwoman Valentine Derrey and Ireland’s Rebecca Codd both finished on three under par.
Wessberg made a number of impressive recovery shots from impossible positions during her round – notably a five-iron approach shot from behind a bush to one foot from the flagstick on the 392yd par-4 14th.
“It was very much up and down today but I’m very happy,” she said. “I had a double on the sixth and made five birdies coming in.”
Codd was also happy to be in with the chance of a later start on Saturday after enduring a day of weather extremes.
“It was relatively calm in comparison to this morning,” she explained. “The most wind we had was probably one club and a half. It kept dropping to nothing and then it would gust up again.
“I got cold with four holes to play. If I had a jacket I would have put it on. When we started it was so hot. It’s been a really long day so I need some food now I think!”
She admitted to struggling a little with her short game but was happy with a round of level par 71.
“I feel good, I like the course and I’m hitting the ball pretty good; so sharpen up a bit on the short game and we’ll see what happens,” she said.
England’s Eleanor Givens was enjoying a stellar start to her professional career in a share of second place on six under par along with French first-round co-leader Julie Maisongrosse with three holes of her second round to play. Givens, who graduated from Tour School in January, had five birdies and no dropped shots on Friday, setting up an intriguing prospect for the weekend. The second round will resume at 7.30am on Saturday following which there will be a halfway cut to the leading 60 professionals and those tied for 60th place.

OXFORD WIN LADIES VARSITY MATCH 7-2 AT HUNSTANTON

REPORT BY NICOLE DU PLESSIS
Captain of the Oxford University Ladies Golf Team
The ladies’ golf teams of Oxford and Cambridge enjoyed a fantastic fixture list throughout the first two terms, which culminated in the Ladies’ Varsity Match held this month.
This year, the ladies met at Hunstanton Golf Club in Norfolk for the 15th Ladies’ Varsity Match. The event was founded in 1998, and the inaugural match was played at Walton Heath Golf Club. Since then, it has only been played at Hunstanton on one other occasion, in 2001 during the captaincy of Gemma Westaby (Cambridge) and Claire Forryan (Oxford), a match which was won by Oxford.
Though Oxford enjoyed a very successful period in the early years of the Varsity Match, in recent years it was Cambridge who had flourished on the course. Their winning streak was broken by Oxford last year, so this year was certain to be a hard-fought match to see whether Oxford would be keeping the trophy for another year, or whether it would be returning to Cambridge once more.
With its long and tricky holes, strategically-placed bunkers, and fast greens, Hunstanton would prove to be a challenging location for this match. The morning began with four times Varsity veteran Gillian Kinnear and her partner Lise Loerup of Oxford playing against Rebecka Ahl and Cambridge captain Kim Bergman.
Despite it being hard fought, Oxford were punished by some difficult ball positions out on the course, and Cambridge managed to close out the match on the 15th.
Also finishing on the 15th was the third foursomes match, between Oxford captain Nicole du Plessis and her partner Sixtine d’Angelin and Cambridge’s Iona Stevenson and Harriet Boswell.
Both sides exhibited some excellent golf, but Oxford took a quick lead in the match and finally clinched it when Cambridge had to concede the 15th.
The middle match was close and both sides fought extremely hard. Oxford fielded another veteran player, the previous year’s captain Min-Yee Tseu, and her partner Melanie Walsh. They played against Courtney Gill and Georgina Harris.
Despite this being a very close match, Oxford eventually managed to pull ahead, and Min-Yee and Melanie secured a 2-1 lead for Oxford at lunch. Unfortunately, Ashley Menante of Cambridge suffered an injury shortly before the Varsity Match, and thus was unable to play, meaning that Cambridge did not have a reserve.
Therefore, there was no one for Oxford reserve Sophie Godard Desmarest to play against, and the reserves match had to be cancelled. However, both players still attended the match to support their teams.
Down 2-1 at lunch, Cambridge knew they were at a disadvantage. However, they were determined not to go down without a fight. Oxford only needed three points for their win, but they would not be easy to get.
Cambridge started the afternoon strongly with their captain, Kim Bergman, who faced Oxford’s Lise Loerup. After facing each other in the morning, this was sure to be an intense match, and it certainly lived up to that expectation. Both players played beautiful golf, and that match remained very close; however, Lise was able to slowly but steadily grind away at Kim until it finally ended with her winning the 17th to take the match 2 and 1.
The second match saw Rebecka Ahl facing Gillian Kinnear. Another intense match, this one saw a quicker finish, as Gillian sought revenge for her loss in the morning. Rebecka fought back gallantly, but in the end Gillian’s determination and experience won out and led to a 5 and 3 finish.
Sixtine d’Angelin managed a similar achievement in her match against Cambridge’s Georgina Harris, playing steady, consistent golf and closing with a win on the par three 14th.
The fourth match featured Courtney Gill for Cambridge and Min-Yee Tseu for Oxford. The closest match yet, this one went down the 18th, and featured the only Cambridge win of the afternoon. Despite playing with an injured shoulder, Min-Yee was on top of her game throughout, and Courtney fought hard to get her well-earned point for the Light Blue side.
Following them was the fifth match, consisting of Iona Stevenson for Cambridge and Oxford’s Melanie Walsh. Iona fought valiantly, but long-hitting and consistent Melanie quickly took the lead and consolidated it to achieve an impressive 6 and 5 win.
The final match of the afternoon was one that provided much excitement for the spectators. Oxford captain Nicole du Plessis faced Cambridge’s Harriet Boswell in a match where there was never more than a hole or two in the difference.
Despite the fact that Oxford had already secured a win, neither player was willing to give up. On the 18th tee, the match was all square, and everyone turned up to watch the exciting conclusion to the day. Harriet fought hard, but the match eventually went Nicole’s way, to bring in the final point for Oxford.
With a score of 7 points for Oxford and 2 points for Cambridge, the Dark Blues were able to retain the trophy.
The day turned out to be extremely enjoyable for both the players and the supporters. The condition of the course was excellent, and fortunately for everyone the weather was fair.
Despite the intense rivalry between the players on the course, everyone was still able to have a good day. The players exhibited excellent sportsmanship, and the spectators were treated to top quality golf played by both teams.
All told, it was a very successful day which will be remembered by everyone, and we are all looking forward to what awaits next year.

CATRIONA HEADS FOR EARLY EXIT FOR SECOND WEEK IN ROW

Catriona Matthew missed the cut on the LPGA Tour last week - and the North Berwick player looks to be on her way to another early exit in this week's Kia Classic at Carlsbad, California.
Not encouraging form with the first major of the LPGA Tour season - the Kraft Nabisco - coming up next week.
Catriona, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, shot a first-round, seven-over-par 79 with only one birdie (at the short sixth) and eight bogeys: third, fourth, fifth, 10th, 11th, 13th, 16th and 18th.
Laura Davies is in the same position - joint 126th.
In fact, apart from a sparkling two-under-par 70 by Jodi Ewart it was not a good day for the Brits.
Becky Morgan (Wales) is T60 after a 74.
Janice Moodie (Scotland) and Melissa Reid) are T90 after 76s.
Sharing the lead at five-under 67 are Ji Young Oh (South Korea), world No 1 Yani Tseng (Taiwan) and Sweden's fast-rising star Caroline Hedwall.
