University of Alabama head coach Jay Seawell has been selected to coach the United States team at this summer’s Palmer Cup at Wilmington CC.
The annual Ryder Cup-style students' contest will he held June 7-9 on the South Course at Wilmington CC. First-year head coach Jim Anderson of Arizona will serve as Seawell’s assistant.
“First, it’s a great honour to be selected as coach and I’m very thankful to be part of the Palmer Cup,” said Seawell. “I’ve had many players that have played in the Palmer Cup and I’m aware of the magnitude it holds in college golf. I look forward to coaching the USA team. It’s a dream come true.”
Seawell was named Alabama’s head men’s golf coach in 2002 and is in his 11th season at the head of the Crimson Tide Program. He has lead his team to six NCAA tournament appearances in the last eight years, including a runner-up finish in 2012.
Seawell has coached 19 All-Americans, most recently during the 2011-2012 season, Justin Thomas, Whitsett, Bobby Wyatt and Hunter Hamrick. Thomas won the Jack Nicklaus, Fred Haskins Award and the Phil Mickelson Award in 2012.
The United States leads the Palmer Cup series 8-7-1 but the European team has had the better of the most recent exchanges.
