DIANA LUNA IS OVER THE MOON AT SECOND VICTORY IN A MONTH

By BETHAN CUTLER
Ladies European Tour Media Manager
Italian Diana Luna claimed her second victory inside a month after emerging from a crowded leader board to take the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open at Golf Gerre Losone.
After the event was shortened from 72 holes to 54 due to bad weather, Luna played 27 holes in blazing sunshine on Sunday.
The 28-year-old from Rome carded a final round of five under par 67 for 54-hole 13 under par total of 203, one stroke ahead of Frenchwoman Sophie Giquel-Bettan, Australian Kristie Smith and the 2010 champion, Lee-Anne Pace from South Africa, who all shot 68.
Becky Brewerton and Melissa Reid carded rounds of 67 and 69 respectively to tie for fifth place two strokes further back, with Caroline Hedwall, Karen Lunn and joint second-round leader Carin Koch sharing seventh on nine under par.
Luna and Pace came to the par-five 18th hole level on 12 under par but Pace pulled her drive into the left hand rough and had to lay up short of the water protecting the green.
After hitting the fairway, Luna then struck a five-wood to four metres setting up an eagle putt, which just missed the hole.
Pace’s three metre birdie putt just trickled off, leaving Luna a short putt to clinch the title.
It was her second victory of the season after her recent win in Germany and the fifth of her eight-year career on the Ladies European Tour.
I feel very emotional at this moment because I wasn’t expecting it,” Luna said. “In the middle of the nine I wasn’t playing great and I made a few bad shots. I really managed to stick together and keep going despite being very happy and tired.”
After signing her score card, she was greeted by her one-year-old daughter, Elena and added that she was looking forward to seeing her husband back at home in Cannes, France.
She said: “I have been working on my mind the last few years. I think the results are here and I really thank you, Vicky Aitken, for this and my coach, Roger Damiano and my husband as well who is very, very supportive.”
Luna is now targeting her second Solheim Cup appearance after she moved to fifth on the European standings, just outside the top four places that will automatically qualify for the team.
I’m really hoping to play Solheim Cup now. I really hope to be in the team now and I will do my best to be in the team,” said Luna, ranked first on the LET’s Henderson Money List after her win.
Last year’s Henderson Money List winner, Pace, tied for second and said: “I’m disappointed obviously not to win but it was a good effort and my golf is back so I’m looking forward to the majors and playing well in them.”
Smith, who won the Pegasus New Zealand Women’s Open in February, was also looking forward to the summer’s majors.
I’ve had not a great five weeks over here and to finish second this week and be able to go home was nice and it feels good. It’s sort of like a relief, I guess,” she said.
“I’m going to work hard on my game. I’ve got a lot of things to work on and a month to do it. I’ll work on my body, work on the game and be ready for the majors.”
Giquel-Bettan, the 2007 Open de Portugal winner, was happy to record her first top-10 finish in nine starts this season. She said: “I finished with a birdie on 18 so I’m really happy with second place. I can play the British and it didn’t happen for such a long time that I’m very happy.”
After playing through illness, second round co-leader Laura Davies finished with a 74 and tied for 12th place with eight other players including French rookie Joanna Klatten.
The seventh edition of the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open will be played over the week June 11-17, 2012.

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) led from wire-to-wire to win the 2011 Irish Women’s Open Strokeplay title at Elm Park, Dublin today
After opening with 64 and 70 to lead the field by 5 strokes overnight, the Co. Cavan teenager fired a flare to the trailing field with a 2 putt birdie at the first, and never looked back. Further birdies at the short fifth and long eight saw her turn two under the card to lead nearest challenger Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush) by ten strokes with just 9 holes remaining. Leona's twin sister Lisa saw her final round challenge fade after a double bogey at the short third.
Leona's only blemish of the weekend was a double bogey on the fifteenth, but she had plenty in the tank to spare and romped home 8 shots ahead of the field. Meadow went on to sign for a best of the day 70 to finish second while Lisa was next best on +3 for the three rounds.

Ireland won the team event followed by Spain , Wales , Germany England and Scotland .

CANADIANS SHOCK RAMPANT GB AND I BY WINNING FOURSOMES

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
The Fat Lady is not singing yet at Fairhaven Golf Club, but Great Britain and Ireland's victory march in the Astor Trophy is in danger of being derailed by Canada.
The Canadians, still seeking their first win this week, stunned the Great Britain and Ireland followers by winning both the morning foursomes on the final day at the Lancashire venue
In the other match, South Africa and Australia shared the foursomes 1-1.
GB and I, after beating New Zealand on Saturday, went into the match against Canada, needing a minimum of a draw to retain the Astor Trophy but at 0-2 in arrears with five singles to play, skipper Tegwen Matthews’ squad needed to dig deep to turn it around.
Nicole Vandermade and Jessica Wallace gave the Canadians a flying start by beating Pamela Pretswell and Holly Clyburn by 2 and 1.
Then Anne Catherine Tanguay and Rebecca Lee Bentham beat Kelsey MacDonald and Amy Boulden with a birdie at the last.
Vandermade and Wallace had the better of the outward half against Pretswell and Clyburn. The Canadians were two up after three holes, lost the fourth, but got it back to a two-hole lead by winning the fifth. Pretswell and Clyburn won their second hole of the morning at the ninth to turn for home one down.
The GB and I pair squared it with a par 3 at the short 10th but lost the 11th to a birdie 4 from the Canadians. After halved holes at 12 and 13, Pretswell and Clyburn squared the match by winning the 14th and 15th with par figures.
A birdie 4 by Vandermade and Wallace put the Canadians on up at the long 16th
Another birdie, a 2 at the short 17th, by Vandermade and Wallace won the hole and the match by 2 and 1.
Kelsey MacDonald and Amy Boulden won the second and third, with a birdie, to go two up in the early stages. Anne Catherine Tanguay and Rebecca Lee Bentham squared matters by winning the short fifth with a birdie 2 and the seventh with a par 4.
GB and I won the eighth with a par but their lead lasted only one hole, the Canadians squaring it at the ninth with a birdie 3.
After five halved holes, Tanguay and Lee Bentham went ahead wit a birdie 4 at the 15th. The long 16th was halved in par 5s. MacDonald and Boulden got a birdie 2 at the short 17th to square the match.
The Canadians won the 18th and the match with a pitch and putt birdie 4, their opponents being just off the back of the green in three shots and pitching their fourth to about 5ft short of the flag.
Bertine Strauss and Iliska Verwey gave South Africa a 1-0 lead by beating Breanne Elliott and Cathleen Santoso 3 and 2.
But Ashley Ona and Emma de Groot of Australia levelled it at 1-1 with 2 and 1 win over Kim Williams and Henriette Frylinck.
Strauss and Verwey, both high in the world amateur rankings, showed their class by winning te first, third and fourth for a three-hole lead. But Williams and Frylinck hit back with successes at the sixth and seventh to be only one down at the turn.
The South Africans won the short 10th but lost the long fifth to a birdie betore going three up with wins at the 12th and 13th.
Elliott and Santoos won the 14th to cut their deficit to two holes but a birdie 4 by te South Africans at the 16th gave them a 3 and 2 win.
Ona and De Groot were two up after three by winning the second and third with birdies. Williams and Frylinck got their foot in the door by winning the sixth and then the eighth to be all square. Ona and De Groot won the ninth to be one up at the turn.
That became a two-hole lead for the South Africans with a success at the 11th but Williams and Frylink birdied tt 12th to keep their hopes alive at one down. However, Ona and De Groot were able to win the 15th with a birdie to go two up with three to play and halves at the 16th and 17th gave the Aussiesca 2 and 1 win.

SICK LAURA SHARES LEAD IN SWISS LADIES OPEN

By BETHAN CUTLER
Ladies European Tour Media Manager
Brave Laura Davies battled through severe sickness to complete a second round of six under par 66 at Golf Gerre Losone on Sunday morning.
The 79-time tournament champion tied for the lead with Sweden’s Carin Koch at nine under par going into Sunday afternoon’s final round, after Saturday’s play was washed out.
According to her caddie Johnny Scott, Davies could hardly put one foot in front of the other as she played the back nine this morning.

Dehydrated after picking up a bug on Thursday evening, she stumbled off to see the doctor for an infusion after handing in her score card, but he was unable to find a vein in her hand.

Scott said: “She will never give up, even if she has to crawl around on her hands and knees.”

Davies admitted that she was stubborn and would not succumb after battling the illness throughout the weather-interrupted round, which she started at 1.10pm on Friday. On a beautiful morning of sunshine, she began at the 11th and dropped a shot at the 12th but picked up birdies on the par-five 15th and 18th holes.

She and Koch lead by one stroke over four other players, including the defending champion Lee-Anne Pace from South Africa, who also competed a round of 66 this morning and Italian Diana Luna, who finished her round of 67. Australian Kristie Smith and Frenchwoman Sophie Giquel-Bettan also sit one stroke back after finishing their second rounds of 66 and 68 on Friday.

Pace was smiling from ear to ear after handing in her card and said: “It was one better than I hoped: I was pleased with that.” She signed off with two birdies and an eagle over her last four holes. She said it was like déjà vu as her eagle putt on 18 was the same as her winning putt in 2010, a 20 footer that was just a ball to the left and she felt confident that she knew the line.

On a tightly packed leader board, there are five players two shots off the lead on seven under par including Australian Karen Lunn and Italian Stefania Croce who finished their second rounds on Friday. Current Henderson Money List leader Christel Boeljon from the Netherlands, England’ Melissa Reid, and Kaisa Ruuttila of Finland also finished at seven under par.

The third and final round will commence at 11.45am local time and the players will be grouped in three-balls, starting from two tees.

LEONA LEADS BY FIVE FROM LISA IN IRISH STROKE-PLAY

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION

Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell), pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, leads the International field on 8 under par and will play with twin sister Lisa at the end of the field to decide the 2011 Irish Women’s Open stroke-play title.
Birdies at the first, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth saw her reach the turn five under the card and further birdies at eleven, seventeen and eighteen saw her take a lunchtime lead of 3 strokes ahead of sister Lisa and surprise packet Chloe Ryan (Castletroy) who signed signed for a career best 68.
Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush), ranked twelfth in the world rankings, opened with a solid 73 and added an impressive level par 71 in the worst of the afternoon weather.
Next best of the Irish is Karen O’Neill (Douglas) on 155 after rounds of 80 and 75, one shot ahead of Lancôme Irish Champion Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co. Down Ladies), Gillain O’Leary ( Cork ) and Charlene Reid (Royal Portrush)
Defending Champion Hannah Burke (ENG) struggled on the back nine of her morning round to sign for 78 and added a 74 in the afternoon to comfortably make the cut.
With 42 players making the cut of 160 and the field teeing off in reverse order of today’s scoring, the Maguire twins will make up the final pairing at 10.48am. Sizeable crowds are once again expected at the beautifully presented parkland Elm Park course where admission is free and juniors are particularly welcome.
