LEONA LEADS BY FIVE FROM LISA IN IRISH STROKE-PLAY

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION

Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell), pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, leads the International field on 8 under par and will play with twin sister Lisa at the end of the field to decide the 2011 Irish Women’s Open stroke-play title.
Birdies at the first, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth saw her reach the turn five under the card and further birdies at eleven, seventeen and eighteen saw her take a lunchtime lead of 3 strokes ahead of sister Lisa and surprise packet Chloe Ryan (Castletroy) who signed signed for a career best 68.
Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush), ranked twelfth in the world rankings, opened with a solid 73 and added an impressive level par 71 in the worst of the afternoon weather.
Next best of the Irish is Karen O’Neill (Douglas) on 155 after rounds of 80 and 75, one shot ahead of Lancôme Irish Champion Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co. Down Ladies), Gillain O’Leary ( Cork ) and Charlene Reid (Royal Portrush)
Defending Champion Hannah Burke (ENG) struggled on the back nine of her morning round to sign for 78 and added a 74 in the afternoon to comfortably make the cut.
With 42 players making the cut of 160 and the field teeing off in reverse order of today’s scoring, the Maguire twins will make up the final pairing at 10.48am. Sizeable crowds are once again expected at the beautifully presented parkland Elm Park course where admission is free and juniors are particularly welcome.
