ABERDEENSHIRE SCHOOLS BEAT THE RAIN AT OLDMELDRUM

Aberdeenshire Schools Golf Tournament held at Oldmeldrum Golf Club yesterday had 52 youngsters from 7 Aberdeenshire Academies (Aboyne, Alford, Banchory, Mackie, Mearns, Meldrum, Turriff) managing to play some good golf in very extreme weather conditions.
In the 5.5 hours that they were out on the course we saw light rain, hail, heavy rain, sunshine and heavy rain again.
After the first heavy downpour we received reports from club members out on the course that some of the greens were unplayable with standing water or streams of water running over them.
The club professional and organiser went out on the course after the first downpour to see if the course was playable. The rain had eased, the sun had come out and we observed most of the greens were playable and the worst ones were quickly improving. The young golfers as we went round clearly wanted to continue so the course was not closed but the decision was taken that because of the extreme weather to be fair to all the players for handicap purposes it should be reductions only.
