JAMES BYRNE HAS A ROUND-2 70 DESPITE A TRIPLE BOGEY 7

James Byrne overcame a triple bogey 7 at the ninth - he had started his second round at the 12th - to return a two-under-par 70 over the 7074yd Waikoloa Kings Course on Hawaii in his first US college event of what should be a big year for the Arizona State University final-year student from Banchory.
Apart from that ninth hole disaster, James had nothing but birdies and pars, birdies coming at regular intervals - 13th, 15th, 18th, second and fourth.
He moved up the scoreboard from joint 76th at the start of the day to joint 49th with one round to go.
He is still fourth of the five Arizona State players in the score rankings and that will not please Byrne who admits that his best form - the kind of play that got him to the final of the British amateur championship at Muirfield last year - eludes him on the US college circuit.
Daniel Miernicki (Oregon), who shot an amazing 10-under 62 on Day 1, again broke par in Round 2, a 69, which kept him in the pole position at 13-under-par 131 - some shooting over a long course!
He leads by two shots from Bob Tway's son Kevin, the Oklahoma State student return scorings of 67 and 66.
Oklahoma State (551) lead the team title chase ahead of UCLA (558). Arizona State (561) are lying sixth in the field of 20 squads.
