ST RULE TROPHY FIRST ROUND

SPARKING KRYSTLE SHARES LEAD WITH KATHARINA

St Regulus member Krystle Caithness knows all the St Andrews courses like the back of her golf glove - and she cashed in on that local knowledge to share the field in the first round of the 54-hole St Rule Trophy tournament over the New Course today.
Krystle, 17, shot an eagle and six birdies on the plus side and four bogeys on the debit column for a four-under-par 71.
Her halves were 36 (one under par) and 35 (three under).
Late in the day Katharina Schallenberg, one of eight Germans in the international field, matched Krystle's 71 with halves of 35 and 36, inclinding an eagle at the sixth and six birdies, three of them over the last four holes.
Two Australians - Jody Fleming, who was drafted into the field when 14-year-old Carly Booth (Comrie) withdrew, and Emma Bennett - and Irish champion Tricia Mangan were sharing third place on 72 at the end of the day.
Tricia produced a stunning finish - birdie 4, birdie 2, birdie 4 - over the last three holes to upgrade what looked like be a par round.
Jody packed in an eagle and five birdies to her scorecard of 72 (36-36). Emma was one over par after five holes and then covered the remainder in four under par with halves of 37 and 35.
Defending champion Naomi Edwards from Yorkshire had a par-matching 75.
One of the best finishes of the day came from 15-year-old Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar). She eagled the 16th, birdied the 17th and eagled the 18th for 34 home and a 75.
New Scottish champion Martine Pow (Selkirk) found the eagles and birdies in short supply as far as she was concerned and signed for an 80.
