AYRSHIRE WOMEN'S COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

ALEX GLENNIE BEATS JANE FINNIE IN CRACKING FINAL

English-born Alex Glennie won the Ayrshire women's county golf championship for the first time at West Kilbride Golf CluB on Thursday. Twice women's club champion at Broadstone and now a member at Prestwick St Nicholas, Mrs Glennie, who was the sixth of the 16 match-play qualifiers, beat Jane Finnie (Troon Ladies) by one hole with one-under-par play in an exciting, fluctuating final, played in dry conditions after the heavy morning rain.
Mrs Finnie, who was Ayrshire champion as Jane Leishman in 1985, came back well to square that match at the 15th after losing the third, fourth, fifth and sixth to a one-under-par run from her opponent.
Jane, the fifth qualifier, scored her first success at the ninth, then birdied the 11th and took the 12th and 15th with pars to be back on level terms.
After a half at the 16th, Alex Glennie struck the decisive blow, winning the 17th with a birdie to edge ahead again. The last was halved.
In the morning semi-finals, Mrs Finnie ended the bid by 1992 champion Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St Cuthbert) to reach the final for the seventh time while Mrs Glennie beat Audrey Thompson (Loudoun).
