BRITISH SENIOR WOMEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

PAM WILLIAMSON FADES AS CHRISTINA BIRKE
BECOMES FIRST SWEDE TO TAKE THE TITLE

Pam Williamson from Edinburgh had a disappointing final round of 86 to drop out of the top 10 and finish tied 18th behind six-shot winner, Christina Birke from Sweden, in the British senior women's open amateur championship at South Staffordshire Golf Club, near Wolverhampton on Friday.
Recent winner of the Irish senior women's open title, Pam from the Baberton club, had given herself a chance of a top-five finish with a second-round 75 but she fell away to a closing score of 86 for a final total of 245.
Christina Birke, runner-up to Ros Page in the championship at Longniddry 12 months ago, became the first Swedish winner of the title, maintaining her six-stroke overnight lead with a final round of four-over-par 77 for a final total of 226.
Sweden had five players in the top eight but England could claim the runner-up in Sue Pidgeon from Wrekin with a 77 for 232 and the third-placed competitor as well, Carole Caldwell (Sunningdale) with a 77 for 233.
One of the biggest recoveries of the tournament was the climb into joint 12th place by former champion and legendary Irish player, Mary McKenna. Mary had almost the whole field ahead of her after an opening round of 92.
Then she came soaring up the scoreboard with rounds of 76 and 75 for 243.
Judith Wheaton holed her tee shot at the sixth hole in the final round. It was her seventh ace in all and meant she automatially became one of the first members of the exclusive Ladies Golf Union Hole in One Club.
Judith, from High Post, finished with a 78 for 248.
