Hannah Darling, only 13, is youngest ever
winner of Scottish girls' Under-18 title

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Hannah Darling (Broomieknowe), only 13 years of age, has become of the youngest winner of the Scottish U18 girls' amateur championship.
She beat Jillian Farrell (Cardross) by 2 holes in the 36-hole final at Scotscraig Golf Club, Fife after being one up at the end of 18 holes.
Jane Connachan was 14 when she won the girls' title for the first time.
Hannah, who has three of a handicap, was one under par for the 36 holes. After being all square at the 31st, which Farrell won with a birdie 2, Darling finished with a winning birdie 2 at the 33rd, a winning eagle 3 with a chip-in at the 34th; lost the 35th to a birdie from Jillian, and then won the 36th with a birdie to her opponent's bogey.
Farrell was three over par for the 36 holes.
Darling was four up at the ninth in the first round but Farrell won the 11th, 12th and 13th to get back to one down.
The finalists combined to produce six birdies over the last seven holes of the first round, Darling birdied the 15th to go two up, Farrell birdieing the 16th to get one back. The 18th was halved in birdies.
“It’s a bit surreal at the moment, my WhatsApp is going crazy,” admitted Darling, going into third year at Lasswade High School and coached by Ian Muir.
“It’s not sunk in yet to be honest. Jillian came back at me, she was making birdies, but chipping in twice was important at both the seventh and the 16th in the second round.”
Darling, announced earlier this week as one of six Scottish girls set to journey to the Solheim Cup next month as part of ‘Project 19’, added: “You have to believe you can do it, but I’m obviously one of the youngest here so it was just about trying to do my best and how I compare with older girls.
“I only got a handicap three years ago, but I’ve been hitting plastic clubs since I was four, coming up through ClubGolf.”

Team Europe's dominance of Vagliano Trophy has surely earned them the right of a separate match against the USA?

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Six Vagliano Trophy wins in a row over Great Britain and Ireland has, in my opinion, earned the Continent of Europe women's amateur team a higher place in the pecking order of women's international golf.
I am not suggesting, as some do, that the Curtis Cup format should be changed so that the United States play an all-Europe team, i.e. one chosen from the ranks of both Great Britain and Ireland, and the Continent of Europe.
What I would like to see is a new women's international trophy match introduced to the golfing calendar, namely the Continent of Europe versus the United States.
The stumbling block is that the Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy matches are played in alternate years which means there is no room to introduce a third, separate contest as I have outlined.
One idea I had - and I am never short of them! - is that GB and I, the USA and the Continent of Europe could play the Curtis Cup, the Vagliano Trophy and the "New Trophy Match" in an intermingled six-day bonanza of international quality amateur women's match-play golf. The Curtis Cup would still feature GB and I v the USA, and the Vagliano Trophy would still be GB and I v Continent of Europe but the third contest on a six-day programme would be the USA v the Continent of Europe, each team having a rest day after two consecutive days of play.
Richard Heath, General Secretary of the European Golf Association, has this to say on the subject:
"Both the Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy are steeped in history and we do enjoy the opportunity the latter presents us in terms of a match against GB and I as a ladies’ equivalent of the Jacques Léglise and St Andrews Trophies.
"There is little doubt regarding the strength of ladies’ elite amateur golf on the Continent and I think that
we could field a team to well-challenge the United States. However, the EGA does offer both the GB and I and the Continental players the opportunity to be selected to play for Europe in the recently-inaugurated Patsy Hankins Trophy vs Asia-Pacific.
"For the younger players, there
is the chance for Junior Solheim and Junior Ryder Cup selection.
"With regard to your concept of a six-day programme featuring GB and I, the Continent of Europe AND the United States,  I
think that the rather disjointed programme would dilute the interest. Following the third day, a team may choose to focus on one particular match and “conserve energy” on another.
"Also, how would it look if: Europe defeated USA, GB and I defeated Europe, USA defeat GB and I – who then really wins with such bittersweet results?"

Darling v Farrell Scottish girls' 36-hole final

SCOTTISH GOLF NEWS RELEASE
In the Scottish U18 girls championship at Scotscraig,  top seed Louise Duncan (West Kilbride), the leading qualifier after the 36 holes of stroke play, lost  2 and 1 against Broomieknowe’s Hannah Darling.

In the other clash, there was another sight surprise, as favourite Shannon McWilliam from Aboyne, who will represent Scotland at women’s European level next week, was edged out 2 and 1 by Scotland girls’ international Jillian Farrell (pictured)  from Cardross.

“I feel like I kept the ball in play very well,” said Farrell (pictured left by courtesy of Scottish Golf).
“I was hitting fairways and greens and that definitely helped. Getting my longer putts to the hole helped too.
“I’m really looking forward to just having the opportunity to go out there and try and win it on Wednesday . I’ll just try and do my best and see how it goes.”
The girls’ handicap match-play final was won by America-based Abby Hunter. She finished one up  against Claire McLaughlin from West Kilbride.

Josh Greer, a 16-year-old Scot who moved with his family to Australia five years ago, has stormed all the way to the Scottish U18 boys’ championship final at Scotscraig GC, Fife.
After a week of upsets at the event, running concurrently with the Scottish girls championship for the first time, Greer saw off two Scotland boy internationals on Tuesday, first taking the scalp of Lewis Irvine (Kirkhill) and then Callum Bruce (Duff House Royal).
A slender figure who originally hails from Gourock, Greer was cheered on by his dad, John, whose working life took him to Perth (the Oz version) in 2012, where his son now plays out of Joondalup in Western Australia.

Having held his nerve to oust Irvine at the 20th, Greer was always in control against Bruce, but had to wait until a birdie at the 17th to claim a memorable 2 and 1 victory.
While the steady drizzle in Fife could have acted as a challenge to Greer, he simply took it in his stride as he continues to enjoy his summer golf ‘holiday’ back in Scotland.

“The new date for this year’s event has allowed me to play,” said Greer, a shorter hitter who only recently turned 16. “I’ve enjoyed my return to Scotland. You could be more aggressive today as there wasn’t as much wind.
“The trip back here is definitely going better than expected, I feel as though I’m getting better each day. I’ve been back to Scotland kind of every second year since we moved to Australia, so I’m still used to the conditions.”
Greer will now meet Greg Dalziel from Airdrie in Wednesday's  36-hole final at Scotscraig, as he came through by a hole against Lochgelly’s Dean Walsh after his poor finish.
