Chloe Goadby and Emma Hale set pace with

one-over-par 77s on the wettest of wet days at

Balgownie

Stirling student Chloe Goadby (St Regulus Ladies), pictured right, and Emma Hale (Royal Troon), pictured below with an umbrella, headed a field of 70 players at the end of one of the wettest first days in living memory at the 103rd Scottish women's amateur golf championship at the mist-shrouded Royal Aberdeen Golf Club links.
It was raining when play started at 8.30am and it still had not stopped when play finished in the first qualifying round at 5.30pm.
Across the River Don at the King's Links, flooded fairways and greens ruled out Pennant League matches but the Balgowie links coped splendidly with the steady downpour.
The greenkeeping staff, with some help from such worthies as Scottish Golf head of events Fraser Munro from Kinross and rules referee Liz Munro from Lossiemouth - "I've never worn Wellington Boots on a golf course before!," squeejeed away what excess water there was to be seen, particularly at the sixth and eighth greens.
Not surprisingly, in such unpleasant conditions, no one managed to equal the par of 76 over a course of just over 6,000yd.
Goadby, 19, set the clubhouse target of one-over 77 before lunchtime and it was only near the end of play that she was joined in the lead by 20-year-old Hale.
Seventeen-year-old Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne), Jennifer Saxton (Muckhart) and Royal Montrose's Gillian Paton are sharing third place on 78.
At the end of the second qualifying round, the leading 32 players will advance to the championship's match-play stages, the final of which is on Saturday. The next 16 available on the leaderboard will contest the Clark Rosebowl match-play competition.

St Rule Trophy winner at St Andrews on Sunday, Clara Young (North Berwick), the 2015 Scottish champion at Monifieth, had four double bogeys in compiling a nine-over 85 (42-43). She is pictured on the right in the Royal Aberdeen clubhouse.
She said: "I've played in some terrible conditions. This was by no means the worst but I have not played all 18 holes in such steady rain, that I can remember.
Clara got off a dismal start with a double bogey 7 and was four over par standing on the fifth tee. And she also finished badly with three double bogeys over the last six holes,
Defending champion Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) had an 84 with equal halves of 42. She had three 7s on her scorecard, one a triple bogey at the 16th and the others double bogeys at the par 5 sixth and 12th.
But Summers could also claim to have notched the only eagle of the day - a 3 at the par-5 18th.
Chloe Goadby has been playing well for weeks and is a firm believer that practice makes perfect.
"I've tried to get my game to peak for the St Rule this past weekend and this week's championship at Balgownie," she said.
"I dropped shots at the second and third but reminded myself that the first two days are all about making the top 32 for the match-play stages so there was no sense at all in letting the head go down.
"I parred the next six holes and that settled me. I birdid the 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th to come home in one-under 36 for a 77. so I am pleased about that."
Emma Hale, rather modestly, says she has never shared the lead in a tournament of the status of the "Scottish."
"In fact, I've never won anything of note at all!"
Her 77 (41-36) figured birdie 4s at the long first, 14th and 18th.
"The greens were quite slow with all the rain but the ball rolled well on them and I did not three putt at all," said Emma who played for the Scotland U18 girls team when she was a junior.
Angus county champion Gillian Paton (Royal Montrose) finished with a 78 for joint third place overnight.
Needing to par the last three holes for a 76 to lead, Gillian bogeyed the 16th and 17th to take two-over 39 for the inward half.
It was much the same story for Monifieth's Heather Munro,  pictured right. Despite double bogeys at the second and sixth, she was in a good position coming up the finishing holes, having birdied the short eighth, 13th and 14th.
But Heather dropped five shots to par over the last four holes and a potential 76 or 77 became a what-might-have been 82. She had a double bogey 6 at the 15th,  a par at the 16th, a bogey at the short 17th and a double bogey 7 at the 18th .
Tara Mactaggart (Minto) ran up a triple bogey 7 at the 13th but responded with birdie 4s at the 14th and 18th, dropping a shot at the 16th in 39 home for a 79.
Scottish U18 girls champion in 2013 and later a beaten finalist in this championship, Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), pictured left,  had a nightmare outward half - for a player of her calibre - of seven-over 46, having started with a double bogey 7 and then bogeyed the third, sixth and ninth with a second double bogey, a 6 at the seventh, tucked in there as well.
Her woes continued with successive bogeys at the 11`th, 12th and 13th, but she did birdied the par5 14th and short 17th although she did have a fourth bogey on the way home, at the 17th.

Shannon (17) keeps the home flag flying on a

very wet day at Balgownie

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Shannon McWilliam, pictured, 17-year-old Aboyne Golf Club junior member, kept the home flag flying on one of the wettest first day's plau in living memory at the 103rd Scottish women's amateur golf championship at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club.
It was raining when play started at 8.30am and it still had not stopped when play finished in the first qualifying round at 5.30pm.
Across the River Don at the King's Links, and even at the neighbouring Murcar Links, flooded fairways and greens ruled out Pennant League matches but the Balgowie links coped splendidly with the steady downpour.
The greenkeeping staff, with some help from such worthies as Scottish Golf head of events Fraser Munro from Kinross and rules referee Liz Munro from Lossiemouth - "I've never worn Wellington boots all day on a golf course before!," squeejeed away what excess water there was to be seen, particularly at the sixth and eighth greens.
At the end of the day, none of the field of 70 players - there were four withdrawals, including Ayrshire rising star Hazel MacGarvie - no one had managed to equal the par of 76 over a course of just over 6,000yd.
Stirling student Chloe Goadby (St Regulus Ladies), 19, set the clubhouse target of one-over 77 before lunchtime and it was only near the end of play that she was joined in the lead by 20-year-old Emma Hale (Troon Ladies).
Shannon McWilliam, Jennifer Saxton (Muckhart) and Royal Montrose's Gillian Paton are sharing third place on 78.
At the end of the second qualifying round, the leading 32 players will advance to the championship's match-play stages, the final of which is on Saturday. The next 16 available on the leaderboard will contest the Clark Rosebowl match-play competition.
McWilliam thought it was the wettest day she had ever played golf - "I've played in worse rain but not rain like this that simply never stopped. At least it wasn't cold. If the weather forecast is right, now we have high winds to look forward to in the second round."
McWilliam, who is not going to accept any of the offers she has had to go to an American university, bogeyed the 16th and 17th when pars would have given her the overnight lead. Not that she was upset by these late slips which gave her halves of 40 and 38 against the par of 39 and 37.
Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) had an 82 with halves of 41. Her inward scorecard contained three birdies, one double bogey 7, and five bogeys: a mixed bad indeed.

9.30 am start for Scottish women's championship second qualifying round

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
With a lot more overnight rain forecast before the high winds rise on Wednesday, Scottish Golf head of events Fraser Munro, pictured, has decided, in consultation with Tournament Director Conor Finlay, to delay the start until 9.30am for the second qualifying round in the 103rd Scottish women's amateur championship at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club.
"We understand that they're going to be a lot more rain overnight and that extra hour could help the Balgownie links dry out a bit, especially if the Wednesday wind is as strong as forecast," said Munro.

Operation squeejee at Balgownie to keep greens playable at Scottish women's chship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Royal Aberdeen Golf Club greenstaff, with the help of referee Liz Munro from Lossiemouth and Fraser Munro (pictured below), Scottish Golf Head of Events from Kinross, were among the squeejee teams removing the excess water off the greens worst affected by the nonstop rain since very early morning.

Play has not been interrupted so far but the conditions have been awful for competitors in the first qualifying round of the 103rd Scottish women's amateur championship.
Liz Munro, a golf referee for many moons, said it was the first time she had worn Wellington boots on a golf course, it was that wet.

"But I finished with dry feet!"
said Liz.

Booth, Hedwall, MacLaren and MacDonald

qualify for US Women’s Open

KELSEY MACDONALD

FROM BETHAN CUTLER, LET
Carly Booth, Caroline Hedwall, Meghan MacLaren and Kelsey MacDonald qualified for the 72nd U.S. Women’s Open conducted by the USGA at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey though Sectional Qualifying – Europe, at Buckinghamshire Golf Club near London on Monday.
Booth (70, 73) and Hedwall (73, 70) tied on 143, one-under-par, to earn their spots after 36 holes played in testing conditions.
After finishing two strokes back, MacLaren and MacDonald then earned their places following a one-hole play-off with Valdis Thora Jonsdottir. The two Britons both made regulation pars on the par-3 ninth, despite the driving rain and swirling winds, while Jonsdottir bogeyed the hole.
Booth, 24, from Comrie, Perthshire, was thrilled to qualify for the $5 million Major championship, which will take place on July 13-17. The two-time LET tournament winner said:
“It was a roller coaster out there. The wind was switching and it was raining sideways. It was like a battlefield, but I stayed strong, stayed positive and stayed patient. Today, a lot of it was good and I had a few bad shots in every part of my game, but I think that’s because the weather was so tough.
"I holed some really good putts and hit some really good drives. I think that was the key today, hitting fairways and greens and giving myself some chances.”
Meanwhile, Hedwall, a five-time champion on the LET, was equalled pleased with her performance in the tough conditions. The 28-year-old from Helsingborg in Sweden said:
“When I played the first round I was just feeling that even par was going to be a good score today and I just tried to hang in there, to be honest. It was really, really tough: very windy and we got some rain. I’m just really happy with my game.”
Ladies European Tour rookie MacLaren led the field after an opening round of 69, but bogeyed her final two holes for a second-round of 76 later in the day. After a tense wait, followed by some putting in the torrential rain and a solid performance in the play-off, the 24-year-old from Nottinghamshire was finally able to celebrate qualifying for her first Major championship.
She said: “Everything that you’ve done before comes down to one hole, or one shot. You have to get your mind right and treat it the same as you would any other shot. It’s nice to get it done.
“I started off really, really well this morning and that’s what got me to this point, the way I played the first seven holes. I managed to make my score when the conditions weren’t too bad and then it was just a case of grinding as well as I could after that, because conditions were really tough out there. I was happy with what I did.
“This is the first time I’ve come to US qualifying, so to suddenly be in the US Women’s Open, I’ve never played in a Major before, so it will be amazing to play against the best players in the world and I can’t wait!”
MacDonald, 26, from Inverness, previously qualified for the US Women’s Open as a rookie in 2004 and will make her second appearance this summer.
Her second round of 74 included a hole-in-one at the 14th, where she used a 6-iron from 153 yards.
After the play-off, she said: “This is my second US Women’s Open as I qualified here for the first one three years ago and I played at Pinehurst. It was a bit daunting, so I know that this year I will enjoy the experience a lot more and feel more comfortable. I just can’t wait. I’m buzzing!
“I made a hole-in-one on 14 as well, so that helped the score. It’s just been a really solid day. Getting through was a highlight but that makes the day extra special.”
