VAGLIANO TROPHY TEAM ANNOUNCED BY R AND A ON THURSDAY

VAGLIANO TROPHY AND JUNIOR VAGLIANO TROPHY GB AND I TEAMS ANNOUNCED BY R AND A TOMORROW

The R and A will announce tomorrow (Thursday) the GB and I teams for the Vagliano Trophy and Junior Vagliano Trophy two-day matches against the Continent of Europe at Circolo Bogogno, near Milan, Italy on June 30-July 1.

The leading four GB and I players in the Women's World Amateur Rankings will gain automatic selection.

They are Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell), Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies), Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) and India Clyburn (Woodhall Spa).

In the past the LGU Order of Merit provided another two automatic selections but not now. As Mehaffey and Maguire are Nos 1 and 2 in the R and A Women's Order of Merit, there will be no automatic picks from that source.

Which means that the selection panel will have four wild-card picks, the Vagliano Trophy team strength having been reduced from nine a side in the past to eight players aside.

Lianna Bailey (Kirby Muxloe) is the fifth best GB and I player in the WWAGR.

Discounting Mehaffey and Maguire, the leading players in the R and A women's order of merit are:
3 Gemma Clews (Delamere Forest), 4 Georgia Price (Bude and North Cornwall), 5 Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne), 6 Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe), 7 Lianna Bailey (Kirby Muxloe), 8 Gemma Batty (Moffat).

Although not in the top 20 of the R and A Women's Order of Merit, Maria Dunne, a member of the Curtis Cup-winning team at Dun Laoghaire in 2016, does have recent form to commend her to the selection panel. She won the Irish women's open amateur stroke play championship.

The Junior Vagliano Trophy is a six a side match for Under-16s and all the GB and I players will be chosen by the selection panel.

Elaine Farquharson-Black (Deeside) will captain the GB and I Vagliano Trophy team while Ireland's Claire Coughlan-Ryan is skipper of the GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy squad.

Since the Vagliano Trophy series began in 1959, GB and I have won 15 matches, the Continent of Europe 13 and one has been drawn. But the Continent has much the better record in recent years, having won nine of the past 11 biennial fixtures, including five in a row since 2007.

But the GB and I team, captained by Farquharson-Black, lost by only 1pt (11.5-12.5) in the 2015 match at Malone Golf Club, Belfast.
