More Honors for Leona Maguire; Wins GolfStat Cup

SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – The honors keep rolling in for Duke University third-year student Leona Maguire as she was selected the winner of the 2016-17 GolfStat Cup Wednesday. The award, presented by GolfStat, is presented to the player who has the best scoring average versus par with at least 20 full rounds played during a season.

Maguire registered a NCAA-best 70.29 stroke average on the season, which was the lowest stroke average in the NCAA since the 2002 campaign when Lorena Ochoa notched a 70.13 ledger.

During the 2016-17 season, Maguire collected eight top five placements, three wins, nine rounds in the 60s and 21 rounds of even or under par. Her 70.29 stroke average broke her own Duke single-season record and was a new ACC record. She finished no lower than tied sixth over the course of the season.

Maguire won the ACC Individual Championship, while helping the Blue Devils claim Duke's 20th ACC title in school history. She finished runner-up at the NCAA Championship, won the LSU Tiger Golf Classic and the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. Maguire also placed tied sixth at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional.

A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire became just the second Blue Devil to win the GolfStat Cup multiple times – Amanda Blumenherst (2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08). A Duke golfer has won the award eight different times since the 2003-04 campaign. Other Blue Devils to win the GolfStat Cup include Jenny Chuasiriporn (1997-98), Liz Janangelo (2003-04), Blumenherst, Lindy Duncan (2011-12) Maguire (2014-15).
