ALICE HEWSON MAKES GOOD START WITH A 69


Curtis Cup player Alice Hewson shot a three-under-par 69 to be in a three-way tie for second place at the end of the first round of the three-day NCAA Athens Regional at the University of Georgia golf course, at Athens in the stage of Georgia.

With the temperature up in the 70s from early morning, Alice birdied the first, fifth, par-5 9th, par-5 12th and 14th in halves of 34 (two under) and 35 (one under). She had one bogey, at the seventh.

Hewson, from Berkhamsted, chasing a place in the GB and I team (to be announced next week) for the Vagliano Trophy contest against the Continent of Europe in Italy next month, is sharing second place with Sarah Burnham (Michigan State) and Lauren Stephenson (Alabama).

At the head of a field of 96 players is Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest) with a 68, one ahead of Hewson and Co.

Scots Connie Jaffrey (Kansas State) and Fiona Liddell (Baylor) are already 11 shots in arrears in joint 67th place. They both had scores of seven-over 79s at the 6,344yd par-72 course.

Jaffrey had a double bogey 5 at the short 13th. Her only birdie in halves of 39 and 40 came at the par-5 18th.

Liddell, whose father is a club pro in Germany. had a double bogey 6 at the par-4 second in halves of 41 and 38.

Chloe Weir from Northern Ireland and a student at Kansas State, is T78 with an 80.
