From Duke coach, Jack Winters

April 2, 2017
DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke and Northwestern women's golf teams came together in Durham, N.C., Sunday, April 2 for a doubleheader match play at the Duke University Golf Club.

The two squads teed off at sunrise Sunday morning and the Blue Devils wasted no time getting off to a good start winning five of the six matches and taking a 5-1 advantage through round one. Junior Leona Maguire downed Hannah Kim, 6&5, to give Duke a 1-0 lead, but Stephanie Lau of Northwestern came back to down Virginia Elena Carta, 4&3, to even the score, 1-1.

Duke would win the next four matches to go ahead 5-1.

Blue Devil rookie Ana Belac defeated Sarah Cho, 4&3, Gurbani Singh knocked off Janet Mao, 3&1, Sandy Choi beat Kacie Komoto, 6&5 and Lisa Maguire won, 1up, against Monica Matsubara.

Choi got off to a hot start and won the first four holes to go 4up against Komoto. She then won the sixth, seventh and ninth to go ahead 6up, before losing hole 11. She closed the match on hole 13 with a 6&5 win.

The golfers immediately turned around and hit the course for another match against each other.

Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, would finish the day 2-0 as she bounced former high school teammate Cho, 4&2. Choi won holes No. 1, No. 7 and No. 15, before birding the 16th to take the victory.

Northwestern then turned the momentum in its favor winning three straight matches. Kim defeated Carta, 3&1, Lau knocked off Leona Maguire, 2&1, and Komoto won, 3&1, over Belac.

With the overall match score, 6-4, in favor of the Blue Devils, Singh halved with Mao to clinch the team victory for Duke. Lisa Maguire also halved with Matsubara to close out play.

"It was a very worthwhile event," said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. "We were able to get some good competition without traveling. Because the pace of play was pretty fast, we finished all of the second matches except one, and that one ended in a half. Northwestern is a talented team. There were close matches in the morning and afternoon."

Duke will next travel to Pawley's Island, S.C., April 13-15 for the ACC Championship, which will be played at The Reserve Golf Club.
