Blue Devil Golfers Open in Second at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Led by a bogey-free three-under-par, 68, Friday by Gurbani Singh, the Duke women's golf team opened the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in second place at the 6,160-yeard, Par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

As a team, Duke carded a two-over-par, 286, and trail Alabama by four strokes after the Tide signed for a two-under-par, 282. Rounding out the top 12 teams are Arizona State (288), South Carolina (289), Baylor (291), Georgia (292), Tennessee (293), Vanderbilt (294), North Carolina (296), Oklahoma State (296), LSU (296) and Wake Forest (296).

Leona Maguire, who is currently the No. 1 ranked collegiate golfer in the nation, opened the front nine with seven pars and bogeys on No. 6 and No. 7. She made the turn at two-over-par and dropped to three-over with a bogey on the 13th hole. Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, registered her first birdie of the day on the 520-yard, par five 15th as she was able to get up-and-down from 70 yards away. She closed the day with another birdie on No. 18 by sinking a five-foot putt, after hitting a five-iron tight. Maguire hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and had 29 putts on the day and is tied for 15th overall.

Junior Lisa Maguire matched a season-best 18-hole ledger with a two-over-par, 73, on Friday and will enter round two tied for 21st. A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire opened the day with bogeys on No. 1 and No. 4, but quickly got back to even par with birdies on the fifth and seventh holes. After a bogey on the eighth hole, Maguire would remain at one-over until she rolled in a birdie on the 374-yard, par four 14th. Maguire stood at even par with three holes remaining, but suffered bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17 to close with a 73. Her three birdies on the day matched a season best. Maguire hit 11 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts on the day.
