Banff Academy, represented by Callum Bruce, Callum Irvine and Ellis Gray, won the Paul Lawrie Foundation Schools’ Team Challenge Scratch Trophy for the first time at Peterculter Golf Club today.

Team captain Bruce led the way with a two-over-par 73, while Irvine and Gray contributed 77 and 79 respectively for a team total of 229 and a winning margin of s ix strokes.
Runners-up were defending champions, Robert Gordon’s College for whom Michael Lawrie  had a 72, Henri Charles an 81 and Cameron Black an 82).
Aboyne Academy’s Shannon McWilliam (75), Dominic Bradburn (80) and Kyle Harker (81) third on 236.

There was some consolation for young Lawrie when he picked up the best individual scratch prize.  His one-over-par score had two birdies – at the fourth and 13th – but they were cancelled out  by dropped shots at the first, second and 12th.

JENNIFER RANKINE IS THE YOUNGEST CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER AT HAGGS CASTL

by Carol Fell

Jennifer Rankine - 2015 Haggs Castle Champion

The Haggs Castle Finals Day was yesterday - Sunday 30th August.  Some dryish weather which is a bit of a surprise given the weather we have suffered this year.

The Ladies Final was Laura McGeachy, the defending Champion against RLCGA's 14 year old Jennifer Rankine.

Laura started well and was two up at the turn. Jennifer started to chip away at this lead and with wins at the 10th, 13th and 14th took the lead. Holes were then halved with Jennifer missing a putt on 17 to close out the match but leaving her 1 up going down 18. Jennifer secured a good 5 on 18 to win two up.

She is the youngest ever Ladies Champion at Haggs Castle.

Thanks go to Neal Stewart for the report

Haggs Castle Golf Club, Glasgow championship winners

Left to right: Calum Elliott, Craig Morrison and Jennifer Rankine with their respective trophies

Jennifer (14) is youngest-ever club champion

Haggs Castle GC held its Finals Day on Sunday in what was an unusually dry day, given the weather this summer.
In eJunior Championship Final, played over 36 holes, Calum Elliott took control in the first round of his match against Ronan Johnston and at the end of the first round had an eight-hole lead.  Although Ronan competed well in the second round he was unable to make inroads to the substantial lead Calum had established and eventually Calum won 8 and 7
The Ladies Championship Final pitted the defending champion Laura McGeachy against 14 year old Jennifer Rankine who had represented Scotland at the European Young Masters in Switzerland earlier this year.
Laura held a two-hole lead after the first nine but Jennifer chipped away at this and with wins at the 10th, 13th and 14th took the lead.
Jennifer had an opportunity to close out the match on the 17th but missed a putt.  She redeemed herself by winning the 18th to win the championship by two holes and become the youngest ever Champion of the Ladies Section at Haggs Castle GC.
In the men's championship final Craig Morrison, champion in 2010, played Chris Dunbar, champion in 2013.  Both players are members of the Haggs Castle GC winning 2015 Brand Putter Team and both were keen to add to their Championship wins.
Neither player could establish a dominant lead and the momentum swung back and forth.  All square with two to go and still all square going down the 36th Chris was on the putting surface in two with Craig on the fringe in 3.  Chris just missed his putt and Craig holed to take the match into extra holes.
Craig made a very good birdie at the 37th to become 2015 Champion.

Kris Tamulis seals maiden win at Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic

Kris Tamulis poses with the trophy after winning the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic
Kris Tamulis poses with the trophy after winning the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic

Kris Tamulis claimed the first LPGA Tour title of her career by winning the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic on Sunday.
Tamulis played 29 holes on the final day of the twice-delayed tournament, the 186th of her LPGA Tour career.
She finished a third-round 67 and closed with a 65 to beat Yani Tseng and Austin Ernst by a stroke.

The 34-year-old former Florida State player had a 17-under 271 total on The Senator Course and didn't show the strain of being in contention with so little margin for error.
"It was amazing," Tamulis said. "I was definitely not expecting this today."
Tseng had rounds of 71 and 67, and Ernst shot 68 and 69 with the weather clearing up after delays totaling nearly seven hours during the previous two days. Both parred the final hole with a chance to force a play off.
Tamulis birdied four of the first six holes in the final round before finally making her only bogey of the last three rounds. She hadn't finished better than fourth on the tour.
She made a short birdie putt on the 17th hole, cheerfully telling two fans "28 of 29 completed today." Then, a long birdie putt, hit seemingly perfectly on line, stopped inches shy of the final hole.
Still smiling, she told her caddie the ball needed just "a little more oomph," then chatted with the teenager carrying the score placard.
She had about 45 minutes to sweat it out. Tseng and Ernst both had makeable birdie putts on 18, on opposite sides of the pin. Ernst's attempt went to the left. Tseng came closer, falling to her knees when her putt lipped out.
"When they both missed I was just shocked," said Tamulis.

Tamulis celebrates her first victory on the LPGA Tour
Tamulis celebrates her first victory on the LPGA Tour
Tamulis had been fourth last year in Prattville and earlier this year at the Meijer LPGA Classic. She didn't make the cut at last week's Canadian Pacific Women's Open after posting two 73 rounds. Her rounds steadily improved from 71 to 68 to 67 and finally 65.
It was her first win since Florida State but she had a pair of runners-up finishes in 2004 on the Symetra Tour.
Tamulis said she was trying to ignore the leaderboard, focusing instead on a countdown from 29 holes.
"The last time I actually saw where it was at was by accident on No. 9," she said. "Then I felt really good and I was just out there trying to have a good time. My goal was to come in here have a decent week, play well and secure my spots in Asia."
She also wanted to ensure she made the field in her hometown of Naples, Florida, for the season finale, the CME Group Tour Championship. Her expression matched the smiley face magnet affixed to her visor, given to her two years ago by an elderly scorekeeper in Phoenix.
Tseng is a 26-year-old Taiwanese player who ranked No. 1 for 109 weeks early in her career. She came close to snapping an 85-event winless streak dating to the 2012 Kia Classic, making a long birdie putt on No. 16.
This was Tseng's second runner-up finish of the year.
Ernst was seeking her second tour win. Sydnee Michaels finished with a 67, finishing in a fourth-place tie with 2011 winner Lexi Thompson. Thompson closed with a 69 and was in the 60s all four rounds.
